Well Worth Buying

I too have been following this author on Facebook and the beauty and majesty of his prose and equality is amazing. I am posting this review before I receive the book as I have been following it on facebook. It touches my soul and gives me comfort with the peaceful visual pictures and of course the words are well put together and flows just like a gentle stream with the soothing words that bathe you in peace. I don't often buy books of poems, I have been published in the past, but there is just something about the way this book has come together that it's one for the bookshelves so that when friends and family visit and get snoopy..they have something darn good to snoop into. The author is a creative person and it tells a good story from the authors heart, which is what a good poem or book or movie should do. It's a winner and I look forward to more from this author.Please look at this work and consider adding it to your collection or just to start one. Peace to all

Fantastic book that touches the heart

I love this book. You will love it too. I promise. His words in many poems hit home for me, and brought tears to my eyes, and yet gave me comfort. I am still recovering from my husbands death and his words bring memories to my heart. Buy it, u won't be sorry.

Helen Kwok handles the characters and intrigue well

I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Concubine's Daughter. I found the story interesting, the characters memorable, and the situations completely believable. Here I wish to mention a number of things that made a special impression on me. The novel is about Elizabeth Lee, depicting her life as a student and academic, and also on a personal level. It describes how she encounters a series of obstacles and how they are overcome. One's interest is sustained; we want to know how each new crisis will be resolved. The language used in the novel, including the use of short chapters, helps to convey a quick tempo. The story does not drag on; one gets the feeling that time is streaming forward, at a fast pace. The theme of alienation runs through the story. Alienation is often dealt with in connection with immigrants adjusting to a new culture in a foreign country. In The Concubine's Daughter, Elizabeth, ethnically Chinese and living in a British colony, shares with new immigrants the same feelings of alienation. Like them, she lacks a clear sense of identity and belonging. The story is told through the thoughts, experiences, and feelings of the main character. The readers are in a position of suspense, in which we know no more than the characters. We are watching the story as it is happening, and neither the readers nor the characters in the novel know the outcomes ahead of time. Sometimes things do not turn out as we expect them to, and often, on re-reading the story, we find certain outcomes to be the exact opposite of what the characters have predicted or wished for. We might say this device contributes to give a special kind of irony. I recommend The Concubine's Daughter strongly, without reservation.

A Good Read

I strongly recommend The Concubine's Daughter to all interested in Hong Kong and its history, and indeed to all who are interested in "a good read". The novel traces the life of the central character, Elizabeth Lee, a raving beauty, from the time she first enters the then only university in Hong Kong. She studies English literature and excels in the subject to the extent that she manages to overcome colonial prejudices to become a teacher in the English Department. She attracts many admirers, one of whom is an intense billionaire tycoon. She refuses him to marry a doctor. She and her husband flee Hong Kong after the 1967 riots and emigrate to Boston, where Elizabeth feels useless and marginalized. The book ends with a return to Hong Kong and the promise of a new life. The author clearly feels a strong affinity with her protagonist since she depicts her with sympathy and insight.

Helen Kwok's book catches the reader up immediately and continues to hold the attention throughout the book. She skillfully and dramatically, but without sementality, portrays the intricate psycological interrelationships between the main characters and the conflicts and connections between cultures. She provides insights which provide better understanding to an American reader of the stresses and strains that can be created when different cultures meet. Strongly recommended to other readers.

I love this book!

I love this book and would recommend it to any woman who intends to keep her family and household traditionally Jewish... I wasn't completely satisfied with the condition the book arrived in because I've ordered this book in the past a few times (only to lend it out & never see it again) and it usually arrives in better condition, but the information is what counts... This book should be in every traditional Jewish home.

Great Writing Style

I sought out this book after a recommendation from
an Orthodox wife of a rabbi I met briefly in a book store.
I really enjoyed the education this book gave me. The author writes in a wonderful style of personal mixed with the halachic. Although the author is Modern Orthodox I believe she gives a great overall view of running a traditional home. Bravo.

About the Author
Dave Hutchinson was born in Sheffield in 1960. After reading American Studies at the University of Nottingham, he became a journalist. He's the author of five collections of short stories and two novels, and his novella The Push was shortlisted for the 2010 BSFA award for short fiction. He has also edited two anthologies and co-edited a third. His short story 'The Incredible Exploding Man' featured in the first Solaris Rising anthology, and was selected for the Year's Best Science Fiction collection. He lives in north London with his wife and several cats.

An excellent return to Hutchinson's near-future balkanized Europe

Europe at Midnight isn’t so much a direct sequel to Europe in Autumn as it is a companion piece. Those hoping for the continued adventures of Rudi, coureur-chef may be disappointed to find themselves following two plotlines on another branch of the railway, but I think that was the right choice. I’ll also note that while the book can be read semi-independent of Europe in Autumn, the first book did such a wonderful job of drawing the reader in while introducing its setting, while Europe at Midnight all but throws the reader into the plot on page one. I vastly prefer that to a tedious “let’s recap the last book” chapter, or worse, ongoing exposition dumps, but I can see how a first-time reader could be overwhelmed without knowledge from the first book to set expectations. (To be honest, I wrote this expecting the reader to have some familiarity with the first book.)

The novel’s first storyline follows a man with the nom-de-plume Rupert of Hentzau. Rupe’s an intelligence officer for the mysterious “Campus,” a warped vision of a university’s hierarchical structure turned into its own sovereign state, existing in war-torn disarray. Rupert investigates dead bodies dredged up from the river, though indications are that others managed to escape the Campus. That’s a baffling thought, as here there is nothing but the Campus. It doesn’t take much to assume the Campus isn’t exactly in the fragmented Europe we know but exists in a pocket universe; Rupert does make the trip to the continent as he’s sucked into his own Ruritanian intrigues, coaxed off the Campus by intrigues most nefarious.

Meanwhile. Jim is an intelligence officer for the English government, tasked with keeping tabs on the new nations springing up overnight. With an independent England on edge from the Global War on Terror, its population recovering from the Xian flu, and watching Europe in geopolitical freefall, there are plenty of potential threats that could catch Jim’s professional interest. So it’s telling when Jim is called in to investigate the stabbing of a man on a bus, a mere assault case that’s anything but. The victim’s identity and origin are key to a larger intrigue, where England may find itself at war with not just another state but another universe…

Europe at Midnight jumps between these two narratives, each a kind of police procedural turned spy thriller. These two entwined plots lead through a series of deep and layered secrets, all the way back to Europe in Autumn‘s big SFnal twist: the existence of another universe, overlaying Europe somehow. Not only does the novel cover a fragmented Europe continually shedding micro-states and polities, it takes several long glances at the Community, an alternate Europe crafted by some canny 18th-century cartographers who created their own world—the Europe of an Agatha Christie cozy, where a prim and proper English countryside overran the continent. One of Hutchinson’s masterstrokes with Autumn was the guidebook feel, with an overview of each polity the plot criss-crossed. Not only does that continue—here’s a glance at the Eurovision contest, already all kitsch and camp and national identity, now with 532 entries—but it takes a long look that expands upon the Community.

Needless to say, Europe at Midnight has a faster pace than its predecessor; as mentioned it jumps into Rupe’s plot without nary an aside, and continues to ramp up in intensity and mystery with every chapter. The protagonists are more mysterious and less defined than Rudi was, but are well-characterized: Rupert is like a bumbling academic, especially in the foreign land of England, while Jim is more the consummate professional. The writing and plotting are well-balanced, making for a very engaging novel—it’s a hard book to put down. I do have to say, I didn’t find it as immediately accessible; within a few pages I guessed the Campus was in a pocket-universe—the Community fresh in memory—but the sheer inexplicable weirdness of this construct was disorienting at first. And it’s worth noting that much of the novel takes place in either a pocket-universe or England, and rarely visits the fascinating geopolitical chaos on the continent.

What the Fractured Europe Sequence excels at is taking the spy thrillers of the Cold War era and recasting them as slick, modern SF. It’s a deep look at a fascinating near-future world, and a constant reminder of how history and geopolitics shape the future. An author needs to be clever and deft to handle a complex, multi-layered plot of this magnitude, and Hutchison nails it; that’s not even taking into the account the depth of this setting, furthering the real world’s complexity with science fiction. Really, quibbles aside, Europe at Midnight is a smart and sophisticated SF novel, possibly even outsmarting its readers. Luckily it continues with bragging, encouraging readers on through its engaging characterization and riveting plot. If you can stick with the convoluted plot, you’ll be rewarded with one of the most intelligent and well-written SF novels in print today.

You can't get to Ernshire from here

A little bit Twilight Zone, a bit more Southern Reach, and a lot of China Miéville, "Europe at Midnight" is about a place you can't get to from here.

“In October 1822, the Whitton-Whyte [family] publish the first edition of Sheet 2000, a map of the area to the West of London. It contains a number of... errors. It includes a village called ‘Stanhurst,’ where no such village exists. Over the next seventy years or so, they publish a number of revisions which not only compound the error, but add to it, until the final revision shows a completely imaginary county, called ‘Ernshire,’ in great detail." "There’s an invisible county where Heathrow is, it’s full of people, and we have no idea what they’re doing." It's a pocket universe.

The situation is no clearer inside Ernshire where rival factions are at war for control of what? A tiny country that you can ride across on a bicycle.

I have not read "Europe in Autumn" and I enjoyed the added surrealism of not having an information base. I felt exhilarated, much as I did when I mistook the title order of Southern Reach and started with Book 2.

Very little is what it seems. The characters are intelligent, if a bit impenetrable. I enjoyed reading.

I agree with an earlier reviewer who said "Europe at Midnight isn’t so much a direct sequel to Europe in Autumn as it is a companion piece" however, it helps a lot if you have read Europe in Autumn, because you need to know what Couriers are and what they do to get the most from this book. If you like John LaCarre you will probably like this book. Like LaCarre the author does not spell everything out and trusts that the reader will fill in the appropriate blanks. The main role for fantasy in this book is to provide another "country" to the political mix. If you like espionage stories and you like LaCarre's style then I think you will like this book.

This study, a contribution to the fields of social history and group biography, looks at the formation of the merchant group, and at the social patterns which assured the merchants' primacy in the economic and social life of the colony. Origin, education, recruitment, group perpetuation and social mobility are treated in depth. The role of women and marriage in recruiting individual merchants into mercantile families and clans is a central issue. Professor Socolow also looks at the merchants' roles in commerce and society, lay religious institutions and local government. A biography of one merchant, Gaspar de Santa Coloma, provides a case study of the multiple roles of a porteno merchant.

vivid portrait of a Latin American merchant community

Susan Socolow's portrait of the merchant community of Buenos Aires at the end of the colonial period is dense and vivid. She emphasizes sociological themes but does not neglect economic and political ones. We see the young merchants arriving from Spain, building up businesses with the help of a single clerk or slave, seeking out associates from their own regions of the mother country, marrying much younger women, bringing up children and wards, acquiring real estate and luxurious household goods, placing their own daughters in strategic marriages, participating enthusiastically in religious confraternities and somewhat less enthusiastically in the militia, and taking sides in political battles. Most of the book consists of analytical overviews of specific topics such as "Women, marriage and kinship" and "Religious participation," but in the penultimate chapter, Socolow examines the life story of one representative figure, Gaspar de Santa Coloma, in detail. In the conclusion, she draws some comparisons between her subjects and the merchant community of sixteenth-century Buenos Aires. Reading this book as a historian of British colonial America, I was struck by the many parallels between the strategies of Buenos Aires merchants and those of North American merchants of the same period, as well as by the differences that Catholicism fostered in associational life. Although not illustrated, the book is well-supported by a five-page glossary, a tables of weights, measures, and money, genealogies of key figures, several tables of data, and a substantial bibliography.
