Satisfied by Jeff Manion

In Satisfied, Jeff Manion address an issue prevalent in Western Society and one that plagues Christians, especially in North America, who either through growing salaries or growing credit card debt have made the accumulation of stuff the focus of their lives. Manion talks about the reality of the old saying, “I owe, I owe, it’s off to work I go,” and it’s destructive results.

He starts with this quote, "We live in a consumer-driven, debt-ridden, advertisement saturated culture, and it will require nothing short of total transformation to adopt the heart and brain of Jesus." Manion spends the first part of the book talking about the concept of contentment and how we must learn to admire without having to acquire. To Manion, contentment is "the discipline of being fully alive to God and to others." Yes, it is easy to get caught up in the desire for more, but "if our goal is more, then whatever we have is not enough. He says, “It is like running a race where a finish line doesn't exist." It is easy to fall into this trap, where I fail to enjoy what I have because I obsess over what I lack and others have.

This is a book on giving and finances, yet Manion doesn't focus on money-saving tips, choosing instead on helping us change our focus from ourselves and our money and things to enjoying God and serving others.

I enjoyed the book, and its easy to read style.

Wise words on contentment, gratitude, and giving

Does it sometimes seem that enough is never enough? Jeff Manion, pastor of Ada Bible Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan, challenges Christians to pause a moment and reflect on their spending habits and lifestyle in Satisfied: Discovering Contentment in a World of Consumption. Manion has served for decades at Ada Bible. I never did attend when I lived in Grand Rapids but was familiar with the dynamic, growing ministry of the church. Manion's clear teaching, biblical grounding, and story-telling ability to bring to life the setting of the New Testament are evident in Satisfied and surely reflect on a successful career in the pulpit.

In Satisfied, Manion's target audience is Western Christians who, either through growing salaries or growing credit card debt (or, likely, both) have made the accumulation of stuff the focus of their lives. How easy it is in our culture to believe that what we have equals who we are. He writes, "We live in a consumer-driven, debt-ridden, advertisement saturated culture, and it will require nothing short of total transformation to adopt the heart and brain of Jesus."

One key is contentment, "the discipline of being fully alive to God and to others whatever our material circumstances." We get caught up in the desire for more, but "if our goal is more, then whatever we have is not enough. It is like running a race where a finish line doesn't exist." We might lose our contentment due to comparison with others. I know I often fall into this trap, where I fail to enjoy what I have because I obsess over what I lack and others have. "Comparison is the enemy of the satisfied life." We should foster an attitude of thankfulness for what we have and proper perspective on the blessings in our lives.

Manion is not, however, an ascetic. He acknowledges that God does want to bless us, and wants us to enjoy his blessings. "The gracious Father provides innumerable gifts and wants you to enjoy them." God gives us "a whispered invitation: 'Enjoy this.'" But he does not stop there. When he whispers that he wants us to enjoy his blessings, our response should be, "Is there anything you desire from me?" We may hear him say, "Yes, I want you to share."

Unlike many books on giving and finances, Manion doesn't focus on money-saving tips or suggestions for communal living. His project is more fundamental, to spur a change in focus from ourselves and our money and things to enjoying God and serving others. I enjoyed the book, enjoyed Manion's style, and was challenged by his substance. I am guilty of wanting more, of focusing on money and things, and of letting myself become immersed in our consumer culture. Manion provides a remedy, or at least points us in the right direction.

Book Review: Satisfied

Satisfied, while certainly convicting, did not put me on the guilt trip I'd expected. It did, however, encourage me to examine my purchasing habits and remember that true contentment does not lie in anything I can buy. Manion is upfront and honest about his own struggles to find satisfaction, and I always seem to gain more from books like this where I can identify with the author.

Although a short read, the book is packed with wisdom and some anecdotes to help drive home Manion's points. It's divided into six parts: The School of Contentment, Comparison, Identity Shift, The Challenge of Affluence, The Generous Heart and The Invitation. I found myself particularly touched by the section on Comparison, as I know that I struggle with comparing myself to others and looking at what I don't have rather than appreciating what I do have.

Each section ends with some discussion questions and suggested projects for practical application, making this book an easy one to incorporate into a small group study or class.

All in all, I found Satisfied to be a quick and enjoyable read that is challenging me to seek a counter-cultural life by focusing not so much on pursuing possessions but on seeking after God.

This is the book we've been waiting for. It clarifies, with a wealth of research and historical data, a number of abortion methods. This book finishes the work started by many incomplete zines and websites. It includes current medical methods, herbs and even yoga methods. Additionally, when covering medical methods, it includes ways that women are using those methods - both inside and outside the legal medical profession. Although I've known about tried-and-true, handed-down home-remedies for contraception and self-induced abortions since college and I wish I had discovered this book much, much earlier. The Sage-Femme Collective has complied a myriad of herbal remedies, recommendations and techniques that I've never heard of or imagined. I've seen women use a variety of herbal tonics that included mild abortifacents such as Ginseng and Yarrow to more sure-fire methods like Pennyroyal and even Tansy but this book has them all beat when it comes to options!

Natural Libery's methods include, but are not limited to table foods such as fruits and roots, Vitamin regimens and even acupuncture and yogic muscular stretching and flexing. The methods and plants are thoughtfully compiled in alphabetical order alongside a concise description of the affects, recipes and results. Each method has its own quality rating for safety and effectiveness and include time-sensitive recommendations for beginning or ending an endeavor as well icons to signify hormonal impacts, side-affects & mortality. Using this book as a reference is easy and gives one the confidence and knowledge to perform their own birth control or early-term abortion in privacy. Once again establishing that he is as impressive a nonfiction writer as he is a novelist (How Long Has This Been Going On?; Buddies), Mordden analyzes the many notable hits (and egregious flops) of the 1940s, and describes how they figured intoAand indeed establishedAthat period's importance to the Broadway musical theater. It was a decade of many milestones, chief among which was the emergence of Rodgers and Hammerstein with 1943's unlikely groundbreaker, Oklahoma ("all Broadway gaped as these two partnered up"), followed in 1945 by Carousel ("the piece that truly tells us what a Rodgers and Hammerstein show was"). Mordden's references are up-to-the-minute (he cites the late 1990s Encores! series of revivals at New York's City Center) and his research is meticulousAin his chapter on a particularly significant '40s development, "The Cast Album," he trounces the widely held notion that Oklahoma was the first show to be recorded (it was 1900's Floradora). His gift for the piquant phrase is delightfully evident (Harold Arlen's music for a Bloomer Girl duet is "a slithery wisteria jazz"), as is his fondness for the direct approach (Irving Berlin's Miss Liberty "was a total disaster... a bomb with two wonderful elementsAthe score and the dancing"). And though he delivers the expected encomiums to such stars of the decade as Agnes de Mille and Ethel Merman, he frequently airs provocative, somewhat unusual opinions, as when he says of the composer of Lady in the Dark and Lost in the Stars, "the Broadway musical would not have been what it was without Kurt Weill." In Mordden's opinion, Oklahoma! was a breakthrough and defining moment in musical theater due to its introduction of strong characters, atmosphere, and the integration of dance and song into the fabric of the story. The 1940s were a time of change in the American musical. Although still sporadically popular, the old-fashioned musical comedy, with its silly plots and dependence on big stars, was being supplanted by such more serious, carefully conceived, and artfully executed shows as Oklahoma! and Carousel. This "Rodgers and Hammerstein revolution" was accompanied by another revolution, in recording technology, which produced the original cast record album, which helped transform hit shows into theatrical classics. Mordden's passionate, literate, painstakingly researched history charts the ups and downs of this crucial decade. As in his Make Believe (1997) and Coming Up Roses (1998), on the 1920s and 1950s musical, respectively, he focuses not only on a decade's big successes--in the '40s, Kiss Me Kate, Brigadoon, and Rodgers and Hammerstein's early work--but also on important shows that didn't become hits--such as, in the '40s, Lady in the Darkand shows that never had a chance. Another masterpiece, even when walking the edge

Ethan Mordden is my favorite author of all time -- his breadth and depth of knowledge and critical acumen are utterly unsurpassed among writers on vintage American popular culture. In this book as in all of his others, the way he can, in a few quick, masterful strokes, make you feel like you are at an obscure, unrecorded musical which now exists only as yellowing files in a few libraries is nothing less than astounding. His combination of erudtion, wit and insight never fail to take my breath away. The decade-by-decade series of which this book is the third helps make life worth living, this one helping make sense of a particularly challenging ten years in musicals' history. Near the end, Mordden does indulge in some nervy speculations that could use some more backup, though. Was homophobia really the reason WHERE'S CHARLEY didn't get a cast album? If Porter's music for KISS ME, KATE was so good because he knew the score would be preserved on a record, then why didn't he keep writing at this level afterwards? Since SOUTH PACIFIC came at the end of the decade, we'd like it to be an apotheosis of the developments over that time, but would we really say that of this fine but chunky piece of work if it had come along in 1945? If the invention of the cast album was really why shows started running longer, then why have runs continued getting even longer since? Yet Mordden is such a treasure that one simply takes these as questions you wish you could take up with the master. Overall, no one writing in his bailiwick even approaches him; this book, like all of his work, is a national treasure.

Can't get enough of Mr. Mordden's mordant musical theater observations

One day, someone will stitch together Ethan Mordden's Broadway musical books into one cohesive review of 20th century theater. In the meantime, Beautiful Mornin' is one of his tiptop decade reviews, and critical to his book series as this is the decade when Oklahoma changed everything since it opened. He is really good at tying together separate musical efforts into a larger context, and enlivens his accounts with some decidedly opinionated takes on what's god and what's not good. That is what makes this chronicle fun. He revels in his subject, and the writing shows that.

History Written with Wit and Style

I have two advanced degrees in history and have read hundreds...and I mean hundreds of history books for one reason or another. But I have to say this series, especially this book, as well as the one immediately before and after it, are brilliant. I went into them knowing a great deal about the American musical theater but left with double the knowledge and a real, out loud laugh or two. Amazing books--if you love this very American art form, read these books!

Not for the faint hearted

This is a seminal study of sub Saharan African Oral tradition and when published was way ahead of its time. It is for those who have a genuine interest in what was going on in the African continent before the arrival of Europeans. It is a fascinating attempt to write a continental history based on oral traditions.

About the Author
Eliza F. Kent is an associate professor of religion at Colgate University. She is the author of Converting Women: Gender and Christianity in Colonial South India, which received the CHOICE Award for Outstanding Academic Title of 2004. Her articles have appeared in journals such as Worldviews and the Journal for the Study of Religion, Nature, and Culture. Tazim R. Kassam is an associate professor in the Department of Religion at Syracuse University. She is the author of Songs of Wisdom and Circles of Dance: Hymns of the Satpanth Ismaili Saint, Pir Shams and the co-editor of Ginans: Texts and Contexts. Dr Elliot believes that the study of child language necessarily raises questions about the nature of language - is human language something only humans can learn? - and about learning itself - how does our ability to learn language depend on biological factors, such as our age, and how important is our social and linguistic environment? Little justification is found for the view that language has an independent existence for the young child, and their linguistic achievements are studied within the context of their development in general.

About the Author
David Lippman received his master’s degree in mathematics from Western Washington University and has been teaching at Pierce College in Lakewood, Washington since Fall 2000. David has been a long time advocate of open learning, open materials, and basically any idea that will reduce the cost of education for students. A great math textbook!

I've done pretty high-up math for my age- I've gone up to calculus so far, with A's and B's. So I was a little worried that taking a course like Math in Society would be too easy for me. While a lot of it I understood really well, I never realized how much of the basics I was missing/needed practice on! This mathbook made it simple to rebuild the base of my mathematical education. The problems were fun, and the examples included references to movies like Scream and Saw, and locations nearby and that kept my interest levels up. I will for sure keep this book around to challenge my mind over the summer, so I'm prepared to transfer to Western Washington University this fall. This is a great textbook from the Pacfic Northwest!

Not my kind of math book

This book is being used in my survey of math course, which is required for students not planning to move onto higher levels of math for their degree. With this being said It teaches through examples instead of through concepts. I don't like this teaching style. I pretty much have to go to a tutor to figure out the problems. Not the best for someone who doesnt fully grasp mathematical concepts. It also has a lot to do with the teacher using the book. ALSO have google on hand because a lot of the terminology needs to be looked up, there is no glossary.

Worst math "textbook" I have ever used

Worst math "textbook" I have ever used! Our instructor struggles for teachable course content, and has to resort (daily!) to pulling from other resources in order to complete her lessons; math in society texts from previous years, business math, etc. This book reads like an English book, which is great for the statistics portion, but otherwise makes it difficult to follow. There is simply not enough homework exercises here to firmly grasp and practice the material. I can't believe I am saying this but, I wouldn't mind paying a bit more for a book that better suited my needs for this course; that is a unanimous theme within my class!
