me so much. As I have already started my Wednesday
Night Bible Club, I am slowly adding some things as I
go...although to some the ideas may be old-fashoned,
the positivity (can I use that word?) of the message
is ageless. Ideas are practical and can be made based
on the instructions given. I teach children K-5th
Grade and I can adjust the games for age group.

About the Author

Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis directs the Music Cognition Lab at the University of Arkansas. Her research uses theoretical, behavioral, and neuroimaging methodologies to investigate the dynamic, moment-to-moment experience of listeners without special musical training. She was also trained as a concert pianist.

A Treatise, A Treatise on Repetition

The author, Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis, is a musicologist and cognitive psychologist who uses brain imaging technology in her research on what makes music so special compared to speech or textual reading. Her observation that music and repetition are integrally linked and are biologically rooted is the chief focus of this academic, nearly encyclopedic book, as she also tackles repetition in other aspects of our lives as well, such as daily routines of hygiene, grooming, and morning coffee, various religious practices, and learning, including television advertising. She also mentions pathological repetitions, as in obsessive-compulsive disorder and autism.

The structure of music itself involves repetition, from the simple verse and refrain to pulsing minimalism, with rondos and fugues on the way. Repetition in speech, on the other hand, can become ineffective and boring, unless in oratory and propaganda, cadences and phrasing become musical. Composer Steve Reich even used repeated speech patterns to some of his music. Military drill commands are more effective in delivery and being heard if sung instead of shouted. Perhaps the most interesting and accessible chapter concerns our common experience of listening three times to novel music (or reading three times a complex novel) before able to judge its merits fairly. [See comment for elaboration and examples.] A characteristic of childhood is the need for verbatim repetition of stories, while adulthood prefers gist rephrasing and summations. Also presented are repetiton in trancing, in performances, in standardization of music via recordings, and data from experiments and imaging.

This book is difficult reading, since it is scholarly and assumes some familiarity with classical musicology and even brain anatomy. A simple question, an onion of an answer. As layer by layer new ramifications are exposed, the core explanation remains hidden. Another book is needed for evolutionary aspects of music as communication, or, deeper, in the metaphysics of vibration, oscillation, and orbital repetitions. On Repeat is a fascinating book that offers much to consider and reconsider.

There's more repetition in music than you think

What a great book!
What a great book!

You really didn't need to see that sentence written more than once. But when it comes to music, repetition occurs at all levels and is necessary. This book showed me just how much, and why.

Rigorous and engaging, On Repeat draws from many disciplines (music cognition, music theory, neuroscience, linguistics, musicology) to shine a welcome light on hitherto elusive truths about how repetition in music works to "play the mind".

After reading this, I'll never listen to a piece of music quite the same way again. (In fact, as Margulis showed me, I never could have done anyway).

If you're interesting in understanding how music (all kinds) works, you need this book.

Written in an engaging style, Dr. Margulis’ book offers surprising insights into repetition as a fundamental feature of music. Drawing on diverse examples from across musical genres, the book is at once a well-researched text at the forefront of its field and an accessible answer to some of the music world’s most intriguing questions. The text is artfully woven with examples of common musical experiences (melodies getting stuck in our heads, or why we get tired of a song after listening to it too many times) interspersed with descriptions of clever experiments designed to help explain why these occur. The book underpins a most basic human experience with a multidisciplinary scientific approach that is a joy to read.

Great Reference!!!

While studying for the PMP exam and as a practitioner, I found this tool to be straight-forward and useful for running projects. I would totally recommend it for exam prep and daily reference. I did however notice that one diagram was misaligned on page 222 and it covered part of the subsequent definition making it difficult to read. This slightly impacted my perceived quality of the product. All in all, it's worth the buy.

Iwaited on my front steps for Shay. I didn't want to introduce him to my parents.That was just too complicated. After checking my clothes again, I felt for mynecklace, a silver chain with an inlaid teardrop tanzanite stone,surrounded by diamond studded wings. My grandma had given it to me on my sixteenthbirthday, and I'd thought it was appropriate for tonight. I re-checked thefront of my baby pink cashmere sweater. It matched my black--in honor ofShay--Miss Me jeans. I'd had to dig around my closet to find shoes, since myConverses just weren't going to cut it, and settled on a pair of sparkly blackkitten heels.

At seven, Shay turned onto the cul-de-sac in a shiny black car: a 1957 ChevyBel Air with those unmistakable fins. I knew it well, due to dad's fascinationwith classic vehicles. He pulled into the driveway, hopped out, and strode upto the porch.

Kristin D. Van Risseghem grew up in a small river town in Minnesota with her parents and older sister. And after receiving a double Bachelor of Science degree from Winona State University in Paralegal and Corrections, she worked as a Paralegal for various law firms around the Twin Cities for 14 years. Then she left the legal field and is now a Senior Buyer for a technology company. Currently, Kristin lives in Eagan with her husband and two Calico cats. She also loves attending book clubs, going shopping, and hanging out with friends. She has come to realize that she absolutely has an addiction to purses and shoes. They are her weakness and probably has way too many of both. In the summer months, Kristin can usually be found lounging on her boat, drinking an ice cold something. The Guardian, a Sword, & Stilettos is a fast paced fantasy complete with captivating characters, thrilling action, and a blossoming romance.

Zoe is an average teenage girl. She's into friends and boys, but when she and her best friend, Kieran are attacked by unusual creatures she soon learns she's anything but average. Zoe also discovers Kieran isn't the person she believed him to be. In fact, he's an angel sent to protect Zoe since birth and the new guy, Shay, she's been crushing on is a half-angel on the same mission as Kieran. With her head reeling, Zoe isn't sure what to think, but when she's attacked again and her friend, Sidelle (who happens to be a fairy) rescues her she begins to believe Kieran's story. However, learning she is the chosen one who will fulfill the prophecy in a battle of good versus evil is a little too much for Zoe to grasp. She'd rather just spend time getting to know Shay and forget saving the world, but her protectors have sworn their lives to keep her safe and she knows she can't let them down. Will Zoe accept her role and unite the Enlightens in battle before it costs her everyone she loves?

The Guardian, a Sword, & Stilettos is an enthralling young adult read. The characters are rich and appealing and the plot is unique and well told. The budding romance along with the catty high school girls who torment Zoe help add believeability to the story. I, as I'm sure many parents will too, liked how the author kept Zoe and Shay's relationship innocent with much of the book's focus being on Zoe's inner struggles of doing what's right. All in all I found this to be well rounded story that kept me glued to the pages.

I highly recommend picking up a copy.

The earth told them of her birth.

Zoe, your typical teenage girl, is thrown into a battle of good and evil. Everyone believes she’ll be the savior of the world as we know it. To further complicate matters, she learns that her lifelong best friend, Kieran, is actually her guardian angel. With demons hunting her every move, she has to rely on others to keep her safe.

But when she meets Shay, a nephilim, she is instantly smitten. From the second she laid eyes on him, it was hard to think of anything else. His brilliant wings, muscular physique, and electrical touch are irresistible. Luckily, she gets to spend lots of time with her new beau, as he’s assigned to guard her too.

Between Kieran’s attraction to her, her budding new romance with Shay, and the whole battling evil thing, “Life is complicated all of the sudden.”

All the while still dealing with typical teenage stuff like homework and hormones. Not to mention The Triangles, a group of snobby girls who serve better as bullies than Barbies.

Zoe eventually finds that she has extraordinary powers too, but an Ordinary shouldn’t have those abilities. Maybe she isn’t as average as she once imagined?

I loved this book. The characters were well developed, and the pace was fantastic. I was sad when I got to the last page. I’ll definitely be reading Kristin’s next books. Fans of Lauren Kate’s FALLEN series will also enjoy this.

a brand new adventure featuring ancient prophecies, angels, demons, and a whole lot of teenage angst. Here is the official description of the

What really stood out to this reviewer was how fast the action turned up in the story. Within a few pages the reader is introduced to three of
the main characters, is thrown into a high-octane, life or death situation, and introduces a heated new romance. The characters themselves, mainly
the protagonist Zoe, shows a tremendous amount of character growth through the novel. She goes from a naive, love-struck teenage girl to a
strong, powerful woman, and through the story's plot she more than proves herself worthy of being this series protagonist. The sheer volume of
mythology showcased in this first book is amazing, and the vast amount of different supernatural entities in this series is sure to remind a lot
of readers of the Shadowhunter sage written by the incredible Cassandra Clare.

Overall, this is a phenomenal first entry in the Enlighten series by Kristin D. Van Risseghem. It maintains the quality writing the YA genre has
come to know and love over the last few years, and the abundance of creativity is felt in every sentence by the author. It's filled with commonplace
teenage drama, while incorporating the supernatural realm in a very real and natural way. This is a must read for YA fans out there, so be sure

Sadly disappointed, but it got better near the end. Will go on to read third book :)

It pains me that I'm actually having to say this, particularly since I loved Audrey's falling series, and the first book in the sin trilogy, body, was a good start, but mind, book 2 of the sin trilogy, for me, was a disappointment.

Body picks up from Mind one week later in amongst the planning of Chase and Gillian's upcoming nuptials. This is a continuous storyline so you really need to read Body first before flicking through the pages on this one. I had a really hard time connecting , finding that I really had to push myself to keep reading, or stop myself from just skipping entire paragraphs. I even found myself cringing at times and I really hate that I felt that way when in the past I've had nothing but good experiences with Audrey's work. It was bound to eventually happen, and this will not stop me from reading the third book or any other future works of Ms Carlan. I enjoyed the first book but book 2, just didn't feel … right. I don't know if I was in some sort of weird head space at the time or what, but … sigh … I just didn't connect. The writing didn't feel as it was up to the same standard in the past. It felt … overdone, like there was too many words that described a situation when the dialogue already implied it. It wasn't till I reached chapter 16 that I started to get interested. And that's close to the 75% mark. I also didn't like the POV of the stalker.

But, that last 25% had me hooked. I couldn't put it down. It was exciting, fast paced and interesting. If the writing was below par I certainly didn't notice it as the storyline had sucked me in enough to overcome it. No matter my feelings towards the 2nd book of the series, I definitely will be following Gillian and Chase's story as it concludes in third book, Soul.

Sexy and suspenseful story

After reading ‘Body’, the first book in this trilogy, I was impressed by Ms. Carlan’s writing talent, skillful character development, plot, and the very erotic story of Gillian and Chase. The same can be said of this second book in the series, with the suspense ramping up and reading the POV of the stalker. I thought I had it figured out to two potential suspects. The first book had a nice ‘ending for now’ and I felt okay to wait a little while for the second book. After reading this book, there is definitely a cliffhanger and now I’m wondering how to manage to wait for the third and final book of the series.

Gillian still has her ‘sisters of the soul’ to help with planning the wedding and to keep up her spirits. As the story progresses, my mouth dropped open several times, just astounded at some events. I don’t want to spoil the story but the stalker is really moving forward with overwhelming destruction. I was in tears during parts of the story, not only due to the stalker, but also due to Gillian’s flashbacks. Her ex-husband was so brutal and certain words or events can trigger the flashbacks, which have gotten worse due to the stalker. My heart just broke for her and what she had to deal with. Chase was at a loss at times on exactly what to do to help her but just his presence helped to calm her.

And Chase, WOW, he continues to just amaze me with his care and concern for Gillian and the special plans for time together. With the stalker causing such chaos, Gillian isn’t allowed to be out on her own and initially is irritated with a bodyguard. She comes to depend on the bodyguard as events progress.

But, back to Chase – he is definitely an Alpha, bossy, demanding, but sexy as can be. He and Gillian are drawn to each other and there are several erotic scenes in the book, which I truly enjoyed! He may be bossy but he doesn’t hesitate to show his love for Gillian and wants the wedding as soon as possible.

If you like contemporary romance, suspense, and erotic love scenes, this book is for you. I was tense, scared, happy, teary, sad and highly entertained with the ups and downs of the story. I encourage you to read ‘Body’ first, to have the background and details leading up to this story.

This is the second book in the Trinity Trilogy, and not a stand alone. We left off with an engagement and now we are planning the wedding. A wedding that someone doesn't want to happen. Gillian's stalker goes to grave methods to keep her apart from Chase but it only seems to bind them closer. I liked the synopsis but I just could not get serious about this book. Some of the sexual moments came out of something bad happening and for me it just didn't fit. Overall entertainment is three stars. (less)
