About the Author
Samuel Enoch Stumpf was Emeritus Professor of Philosophy and Emeritus Professor of Law at Vanderbilt University prior to his death in 1998, at the age of eighty. He earned a B.S. in Business and Finance from the University of California at Los Angeles, a B.D. in Theology from Andover Newton Theological School, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Chicago. He joined the Vanderbilt faculty in 1948 and served as Chair of the Philosophy Department from 1952 to 1967. After a five-year term as President of Cornell College, Professor Stumpf returned to Vanderbilt, where he remained until his retirement in 1984. Professor Stumpf’s publications include Democratic Manifesto (1954), Morality and the Law (1966), and four McGraw-Hill textbooks: Socrates to Sartre: A History of Philosophy (1966; 6th ed., posthumous, 1999); Philosophical Readings: Selected Problems (1971; 4th ed., 1994); Philosophy: History and Problems (1971; 5th ed., 1994); and Elements of Philosophy: An Introduction (1979; 3rd ed., 1993).

DONALD C. ABEL is Professor of Philosophy at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin. He holds a B.A. in Philosophy from Gonzaga University, an M.A. in Philosophy from Tulane University, a Ph.L. in Philosophy from St. Michael’s Institute, an M.Div. in Theology from Loyola University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Northwestern University. He is the author of Freud on Instinct and Morality (1989), Theories of Human Nature: Classical and Contemporary Readings (McGraw-Hill, 1992), Fifty Readings in Philosophy (McGraw-Hill 1994; 2nd. ed., 2004), and coauthor (with Samuel Enoch Stumpf, deceased) of Elements of Philosophy: An Introduction, 4th ed. (McGraw-Hill, 2002). He is the editor of Discourses, an electronic database of philosophy readings that is part of Primis, McGraw-Hill’s online resource for creating customized textbooks, and the editor of the readings in PowerWeb: Philosophy and PowerWeb: Ethics, McGraw-Hill’s online supplements for introductory philosophy courses and ethics courses. Professor Abel has received two awards for excellence in teaching and an award for outstanding scholarship. He is a member of the American Philosophical Association, the American Catholic Philosophical Association, the Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy, and the Society for Philosophy and Psychology.

Philosophy Textbook

This book is harder than usual to read but it has some very interesting information. It is not as easy to learn from as others, however with teachers assistance can be an excellent learning material.

Wide in Scope but Narrow in Depth

After several years of watching this book collect dust on my shelf, I finally decided to crack it open and read it. Stumpf does a fairly decent job of encapsulating the amorphous span of human thought from the ancient Greeks to contemporary philosophy but some of his selected excerpts seem incongruous with his intended thesis, if there is one, in writing this book. Granted, it's a formidable task to summarize Western philosophy in just one book and I understand that this was meant to be used as an introductory text for a college class so unless you have a qualified professor guiding you, or if you have the time and patience to research the threads he introduces, then this book is less than satisfying for the casual reader. The author's strongest writing is about the Greek philosophers, which I assume is his forte, but then the collection and summaries degenerate into superficial abstracts. He devotes very little space to Marxism, which is a voluminous subject in its own rights, and ends up with a few sections of modern Critical Analysis which is deconstructionism (in my opinion) masquerading as philosophical thought. My final thoughts as I finished this book was that philosophy has taken a seat in the back of the academic bus and no longer provides answers but only questions that will continue to be endlessly debated by elitists who value nostalgia and peer approval more than social relevancy.

Douglas identifies five types of public and private designed landscapes in New Orleans: squares, linear open spaces, urban parks, commercial pleasure gardens, and domestic gardens. Discussing their design, function, and content, he shows how specific examples of each contribute to the city's unique character and also fit within the larger context of American landscape design history. Each type has its own complexion and reflects the influence of those who occupied it. Though New Orleanians lived in strata according to language, cultural identity, economics, and race, they found common ground, literally, in their community's landscapes.

Douglas's sweeping study, illustrated with over 90 color and black-and-white images, includes an exploration of archival horticultural books, almanacs, and periodicals; information about laborers who actually built landscapes; details of horticultural commerce, services, and marketing materials; and an exhaustive inventory of plants grown in New Orleans for agricultural, medicinal, and ornamental uses.

This book has been sorely needed for decades. Lake Douglas has integrated garden design and horticulture in a carefully researched and written book.
For those of us interested in plants used in the early gardens of Louisiana, the book is especially welcomed. What a labor of love, thank you and kudos to
the author.

A Very Thorough Study!

It is a daunting study - very thorough. The book demands that readers have good eyesight because the print is of necessity very small to fit all that research into one book. The photos are also very small and do not show the lushness of our tropical materials. I love the inclusion of gardening and plant choice - New Orleans, Louisiana, is such a different area for growing compared with other portions of the United States. "Public Spaces" is exceedingly detailed and thus requires concentration to read and absorb.

R. I. (Bob) Tricker, Former Professor of Finance, Hong Kong University. Honorary Professor Hong Kong Baptist University and Hong Kong Open University.

Dr. R. I. (Bob) Tricker was a chartered accountant, an officer in the Royal Navy, and financial controller of an industrial company, before studying at the Harvard Business School and becoming a Research Fellow at Oxford University. He was Professor of Management Information Systems at Warwick University, then Director of the Oxford Centre for Management Studies (now the Said Business School), before being appointed Professor of Finance at the University of Hong Kong. His books include The Independent Director (1978), Corporate Governance (1984) the first book with that title, and The Economist Essential Director (5th edition 2003). He currently holds honorary professorships of two Hong Kong Universities.

Good book, wish there was even more

I bought this book for my son along with other sat prep books. For the price my son says that this is a good book and is written in a way that is easy to read. He read the entire book in one day. He says the content is very helpful and going through it myself I was able to follow along with my son's Ti-84 calculator. There are many practice questions but no practice tests in this book. For practice tests I recommend the official study guide from college board. Other than that this is a great book for the money. Wow, Great even for Inequalities

The Author really knows these exams! He rightfully points out how tough inequalities are (p. 69), and gives some great examples on how to use the TI for them. They also are the heart of both of these exams, as well as most math competitions today.

This is one of those books on demand / create space deals, printed when you buy it, and has only 145 pages with quite large type. Every sentence is of value, and this will leave you wishing for more from this outstanding author. At this reasonable price, it's a must have along with the other test prep guides, and you'll really GET the calc side of the exams when you're done.

Great Book, Great Price

This is a very useful book for any student thinking about taking the SAT. It is very well organized and full of helpful examples and problem solving strategies. This book is great for students who might struggle with math and want some tricks to increase their performance, students who excel at math but would like to have some time saving methods of problem solving, or anyone in between. It isn't a comprehensive study book (only math focused) like some of the Princeton Review or Kaplan books, but unlike those books it provides more concrete problem solving strategies and tools to utilize the only resource (a calculator) that you are allowed on the test.
