Louise Bedford has degrees in Psychology and Business from Monash University. She trades full-time from her home in Melbourne and is a regular speaker on the subject. She conducts workshops and seminars throughout Australia, and is the author of the top-selling books The Secret of Writing Options, The Secret of Candlestick Charting and Trading Secrets.

Excellent beginner's book

Louise Bedford's books were my introduction to the world of technical analysis, and I highly recommend them for budding Australian traders. 'Charting Secrets' is one of her three important books for beginners (the others being 'Trading Secrets' and 'Secrets of Candlestick Charting'). Here, Bedford introduces the main elementary tools for charting and technical analysis; trendlines, volumes, moving averages, and momentum indicators. She also introduces candlesticks and discusses common reversal and continuation patterns. Essentially, she provides the technical basics that are necessary for beginners to start trading.
The book provides a wealth of information while also being very readable. In particular, Bedford discusses not only technical aspects but the human psychology behind them, to help newcomers understand the mentality of the market (Why does the share encounter resistance at certain points? Why do dead cat bounces occur?). Bedford also has the ability to write in very simple layman terms without making it seem as if she's being condescending or "talking down" to us. I had almost no experience in this field, but her explanations were very clear and understandable, and above all, interesting.
Like all her books, 'Charting Secrets' is organised as an exercise book rather than simply a technical reference. She provides question-and-answer sections at the end of each chapter, as well as other analytical exercises throughout the book. These help enormously, not only in understanding the content, but also in gaining confidence and experience in technical analysis. Bedford has no time for "paper traders" and other armchair experts, and you can really feel her enthusiasm to have you get out there and start trading for real.
My only slight quibble with the book is the final three chapters, covering trading psychology, system development, and an introduction to options and short-selling. There's certainly some useful information here, but it's not really self-contained. Likewise the appendix on candlesticks. These subjects are all covered in much greater detail in her other books such as 'Trading Secrets', 'Secrets of Candlestick Charting' and 'The Secret Of Writing Options'. It's really best to get the full story rather than the abbreviated summaries here.
This is a great introduction and I highly recommend it for Australian traders at the beginner level. [4.5 stars]
