Waste of money

This book is just a compilation of bad CFEngine 3 recipes that Mark Burgess would never approve.
In this book, you will learn to use CFEngine as a script engine, while the real power of CFEngine is in the promises philosophy.
And I'm not even talking about all the mistakes I found in the book, making it very tiring to read.
Choose the other book about CFEngine 3, it's cheaper, way better, and you'll understand what you read.

Almost useless

I bought this book after reading some of the cfengine3 documentation on-line (we are evaluating it, we use a different configuration management framework but I am willing to switch) looking for an organized and exaustive introduction that i could keep on my desk and that I could use, while learning the tool, without losing myself on the site or within a dozen different PDFs. I have to say I am really disappointed, for several reasons:
* Horrible editing: many typos and misformatting.
* Full of redundant useless stuff, the author keep pasting-in verbose output from cfengine3, without editing away the one-page header that is consistently the same all the time.
* Many important concepts are not given barely enough depth. A beginner guide is not supposed NOT to explain the important stuff.
* In several places it seems more an advertising of the commercial edition (cfengine Nova) and it leaves the impression that cfengine3 (community edition) is a crippled piece of software, that requires you to switch to the commercial version as soon as you start doing something "enterprisey" e.g. dealing with virtualized machines. (Nonetheless I am still not sure it is so)
Overall (to me) it feels like a rushed, scarcely-commented, and badly-edited collection of inputs and outputs. If I was not really convinced (from OTHER sources) that the software has its technical merits, the evaluation of the cfengine3 framework will already be over.

Poorly written, poorly edited.

Book never adequately explains any terminology used by CFEngine3, examples are either very poor (from best practices standpoint) or completely unworkable due to gross errors. The book also completely fails to explain the syntax. You're left to guess/figure it out. Reading this book will make CFEngine3 look a thousand times more complicated than it actually is, and will probably actually impede your ability to understand and deploy it. There are many places where the editing is so bad that there's actual repeats of large chunks of text. Follow the other poor review on here, and don't waste your money on this book. The documentation on cfengine.com is better but a bit rougher to find a good starting point at this point in time (2012/03/09)
