A veteran astronaut weighs in on queries ranging from how the universe began to how to pee in a spacesuit. The hundreds of questions are grouped in broadly topical chapters but otherwise arranged in no particular order. They cover an astronaut's qualifications, training, and work; what it feels like to travel into space and to live there; the nature of the universe and our near-future prospects for exploring it. Jones draws on his experiences on four space shuttle flights between 1994 and 2001 for his answers, which are usually fairly lengthy, though he plainly leaves a few things out: if "NASA astronauts wait an average of five years between missions," why were his so much closer together? Will he ever go to space again? "Not if I want to stay married." Still, he often drills down to the nitty-gritty: what's in the International Space Station's tool kit? A long list, beginning with vise grips and including "a crowbar, a fiber optic boroscope, torque tip drivers." He doesn't trumpet personal opinions, but they can be found in lukewarm responses to questions about space camp and space tourism, as well as a cogent argument for continuing our exploration of the high frontier: "We will be struck again by an asteroid." About the Author
Tom Jones is a planetary scientist, space consultant, professional speaker, and veteran astronaut who completed four space shuttle missions and three spacewalks. Jones has authored six books, including Sky Walking: An Astronaut's Memoir, and he writes for aerospace magazines such as Air & Space Smithsonian, Aerospace America, Popular Mechanics, and The Planetary Report. A senior research scientist for IHMC, he appears regularly on television news as an expert commentator for space exploration and science stories.

Great for all levels of reading and curiosity!

My son declared that in 2040, he would be heading to Mars in the new Z-2 Spacesuit. I will take him at his word, as he is an incredibly curious and pretty intelligent 10 year old. When this book popped up, I jumped at the chance to grab it. I am so glad I did.

The sections are all question and answers. Each question is simple and one or two sentences. Each answer can be one or a few paragraphs. The photos sprinkled in are a nice break. The level of reading is perfect and simple, but not so simple that a kid that's 8-12 will be bored. If they truly want to know any of these things, they will be intrigued. The sections cover all aspects from Aspiring to Space, Training and Getting to Space, different ships, living and working in space, risks, returning from space and coming back to earth and a few more.

After devouring the first chapter about aspirations, education, and all things on how to become an astronaut, my son put the book down only to eat dinner. Then back to the book. He would stop reading and talked to us about space food. Then he would come later and talk to me about duct tape in space, using Russia as a space taxi of sorts and so on.

We looked up information on training at Johnson Space Center. We read up on old missions and names, astronauts and space ships. This book continues to lead us down a rabbit hole of information and we are enjoying the heck out of it. I highly recommend this book for younger kids that would enjoy hearing their parents read a little out loud here and there. For older kids who might not love to read, this book gives great opportunity to just pick up and put down at intervals, or read just a little a night.

The Recommended Age Range Should be 10 to Grandma!

Back in the late 60s or early 70s, I was a student majoring in Physics at California State University, Long Beach. A few astronauts came to the college to talk about the space program. There was a huge audience and everyone was spellbound. Although we were all brilliant and looking forward to the future, we seemed to be most interested in how they went to the bathroom. We all turned into fourth graders. I seem to remember something about a big ball of urine that broke free and floated around the cabin. I've Googled it, but can't seem to find anything specific about the incident during that era, but it's definitely etched in the folds of my brain.

So, when I was given the opportunity to review this book, I figured I'd skim through and then share it with some of my teenaged friends. Well, I'm not giving up this book. It is one of the most fascinating reads ever. Each chapter -- and, yes, there's a lot of information about peeing and pooping -- is incredibly entertaining and educational. Tom Jones shares his earliest memories of first becoming interested in the space program, through his studies and applications for the program, his experiences in space, information about other flights and programs, and the future. At no point does he talk down to the reader. There is enough science plus enough day-to-day information to engage anyone.

I sometimes wish I'd pursued a spot in the space program, but I get car sick -- when I'm driving -- so that probably would have been a bad idea.

I can't recommend this book highly enough. My title speaks my feelings. This book can be enjoyed by anyone from 10 to 100.

Interesting, quirky read, good advice, needs a tad more editing!!

I enjoy the show Million Dollar Listing, both for a peak into some homes I can only dream of owning, and the story behind the three Realtors! So decided to buy this (I admit it was the show that convinced me to purchase the book as it left you wondering who the character Colton was, and in my Type-A cannot wait mode, I could not wait a week and bought the book instead!)

Josh Flagg the author, is exactly the same as Josh Flagg the celebrity Realtor - and by this I mean his character is a little quirky, a little absent minded and rather creative, especially when it comes to selling homes; this book is also quirky and sometimes lacks a little direction, but can be creative and is a fun easy read!

Now the minus here was the lack of complete editing. Several times I found the sentences would repeat themselves - we learn his Grandmother hated paying for valet parking, the we learn this again just two sentences later. There is also a chapter about his drinking whilst at high school , and two pages later I find myself reading the same chapter! At first I thought I had pressed a button on my Kindle by mistake, but nope, there it was, a whole paragraph repeated! But to be fair, I am pretty sure he did not self publish so this was an error on the publishing house! The book is also a little jumpy: one minute he is 4 then a teen, then it jumps back again, but that again is very true to the character that Josh is!!

If you are looking for a complete guide to real estate, then this might not be for you - its a rich kid recap of his life, in a funny and entertaining way; and then proceeds to cover Real Estate! As a fan of the show and knowing what to expect when I purchased it, I enjoyed this read - its a quick, easy and entertaining recap of the life of Josh Flagg as well as his entry into the world of selling million plus dollar homes. It also paints a picture of someone who knows his properties, the history behind them, and has a real passion for his profession!! It shows a much more realistic version of his career than the TV series would suggest - it would assume that these men are selling multiple properties on a monthly or even weekly basis, when in fact, we learn Josh sells around 10 a year!

There are some great pointers about real estate, interesting stories about the properties and the creative ways in which some of them were sold. It is honest about the market slump and the battle between homeowner and realtor when it comes to setting a price; all engaging and I found it a fun read!

I would have given another star if it were better edited / written, but in general any fan of the series, will enjoy this read!

Excellent and Right On the Money

I am an attorney not related to real estate, but I have bought and sold a couple of my personal homes in the past couple years and I can tell you Josh's advice is right on the money. The part about pricing a home realistically or even a tiny bit low is golden advice. People thought I was crazy to price my home below market, but within 7 days I had 2 people fighting over it and I ended up receiving a higher price than if I had listed it at an inflated price right off the bat (even in this lousy market). The idea of listing low was actually scoffed at by my Realtor. She said "everybody will low-ball you no matter the price so why not jack it up". Proof was in the result. She was happy to pick up her large commission check within 40 days! I think this book is very well written, honest and a real breath of fresh air. Josh tells it like it is, and unlike most people, I think Josh is someone who learns from every mistake. Don't worry about having never gone to college Josh...you are perfect the way you are!

Depends on why you are buying this book

I give this book a 3.5 I wish amazon would issue half stars.

As a biography, its 3 stars. As a real estate informational how to, I give it 4 stars.

I watch Million Dollar Listing and love it. I have taken several real estate courses and loved to keep up with what things are selling for in my area. When I moved to my new city, the realtor was surprised I knew as much about what I was looking for as she did. It's easy now to get information.

While watching the show and those beautiful homes, I got interested in Josh as well as Chad, and purchased the book Josh wrote about his grandmother. I recommend it, he gets a great deal of his smarts and savvy from her.

Most of the people who will buy this book do so because of that show. On it, Josh promotes his faith and does so heavily in the book. That part is interesting to me.

I bought this book primarily to see how he started in real estate, how he made his deals. That's the best part of the book. Unfortunatley, that part doesn't start until page 200 or so. I suppose when you are only in your mid 20s you have to stretch your book out but there was a LOT of info on his early childhood, kindergarden, high school. Some of it was interesting, a view on a world of an affluent family in California. Josh says several times he is spoiled. It depends on your point of view. Like in Clueless, it's his normal world. The other reviews haven't mentioned the personal part, but it's a good deal of the book.

As I have said to my husband while watching the show, Josh must have something going on despite his family connections, otherwise he wouldn't continue to be successful.

Part of it I think he is very comfortable in that top echelon world. While some things were made easily by family connections, as he reveals there have been some disappointments too. He keeps up with what's going on, and he got what I call "the extractor factor" in that he learned from top mentors and integrated into his own mode of operation.

It was an easy read, I zipped through it and you will too. The mark of a book is "would I buy it again?" Yes, I would.

I had things I enjoyed but never felt passionate about. The love of animals, travel, art, and creative writing seemed impossible to combine. So I drifted trying to find the thing that ignited a fire in my heart. Then not long ago I decided to finally tell everyone about the lives of the people in my head. Sounds completely crazy I know, but they felt real to me and much like the heroines of my stories I decided to fight for them.

Another great shifter read from Debra Smith.

The second in the Koning Clan books is filled with just as much action, but is longer than the first, so you get more 'bite' to the story. The relationship between Clint and Eva progresses at a fairly decent pace for a shorter novel. You get the insta-attraction, but also the wooing and courtship that's usually lacking in shorter stories. When things do start rolling it's scorching! Eva and Clint are well matched. Eva doesn't play the 'distressed' heroine in the sexual situations. The lady knows what she wants and makes sure Clint give it to her :)

There's also a fun little twist towards the end that made me laugh up a storm :)

My one complaint would be that when someone's mysterious past is revealed, the reader doesn't get the whole story. It seemed like a plot twist added in to make the end doable. (I know that all sounds very vague, but I hate spoilers!) Hopefully in a future installment, more details will be given to satisfy my curiosity.

In all Escaping Love is a fun and sexy after-dinner shifter read that's sure to entertain :)

Another enjoyable installment in the series. The characters were interesting and it has a good plot that will keep you hooked.

It was well written and had good descriptions but sometimes the writing felt rushed together, like there should have been pauses where there weren't.
The ending has left me eager for more, I'm looking forward to reading the next book :)

Oh my, Clint is just so damn sexy, "his breath caressed the sensitive skin of her neck, sending delicious chills down her spine straight to her core. "You can be grumpy and rude, but don't like to me. Ever." I loved his way of thinking, "The little cat needed an attitude adjustment, a spanking would do the trick. He doubted she'd ever had one. The idea of her a** up in the air while her round little cheeks burned from his attentions made his already hard co** pulse with need." He's just so damn panty dropping hot when he explains how they claim mates, "if you run from me again little one, I will not have the restraint to be gentle when I make you mine. You do know how wolves claim their mate don't you?" Her eyes widened as she shook her head. "We pin you to the ground, enter your secret entrance and mark you with our bite while we pound into you." Oh my I want more from this author. I really enjoyed this book, and I hope to see more from the author.

Unveiling a New World

DC Comics is trying something new with their approach to a separate world/franchise than their superhero universe (now equipped with 52 Earths). They're mixing some pulp heroes like Doc Savage, The Avenger, and others with some of their more iconic (a different take on Batman) and almost forgotten heroes like the Blackhawks and Rima the Jungle Girl. Azzarello is also offering new takes on Black Canary, Wildcat, and the Spirit.

The idea sounds intriguing, but it's going to take a lot to convince me that the new direction is something I want to pursue as an avid Doc Savage fan. The setting is now Los Angeles of the 1940s instead of New York for Batman, and he carries guns in shoulder holsters. That was a definite change of pace for me when I picked up the Doc Savage/Batman one-shot, and I wasn't sold them.

Azzarello is a fantastic writer, though, so I'm going to give him some time to develop the property. I loved 100 Bullets and some of the Batman stuff he's done. He's edgy and not afraid to take a story to the limit, and he doesn't shy away from the dark places in men's souls.

However, this is Doc Savage, one of the most iconic heroes out there. He's the original Boy Scout, full of honor and integrity. I grew up on Doc. I wanted to be Doc when I was 12 and 13 years old. He had fantastic adventures in faraway place I couldn't even imagine.

This initial comic serves to set up the series, and there's just too much information coming in at once. But it's a big world and Azzarello jumps into it with both feet. There's a lot of switching around, a lot of storylines that get shaken into motion all at one time.

Doc's dad has just been murdered, and there's a mystery regarding that event that gets even more mysterious. After John Sunlight was introduced (he's the only Doc Savage villain that showed up more than once), I understood that the man seen running in the first few pages of the comic was William Harper Littlejohn, Johnny, one of Doc's regular crew. So there's a lot of ties to the original Doc Savage series.

The Spirit's plot line takes him into the path of the Blackhawks, and I'm certain all of this is going to tie up somewhere. Azzarello is a dedicated plotter and master of twists, so I'm enjoying the different takes on various aspects of the mythos.

I'm going to enjoy the series as its own construct, but I can't help feeling the shadow (pun intended) of the old pulps hanging over this series. I'm glad I'm going to be surprised and occasionally (I'm certain) offended, but part of me (that 12 year old boy) still wishes someone would take a run at Doc in a pure vein. I'm waiting to see what the Doc Savage monthly title springing out of this six-issue mini-series is going to do.

This First Wave feels very much like a rollercoaster ride, and I'm looking forward to/dreading each hairpin curve and torturous descent.

A must-read

Many young people, upon hearing the name Judy Blume, immediately think of the 'Fudge' books or Blume's famous 'Are You There, God? It's Me Margaret?'-- 'Starring Sally J. Freeman As Herself' is a book that is often overlooked. Some kids might be wary of a piece about a girl growing up in the 1940s, but aside from references to the war ending and 40s pop culture, Sally is just your average 10-year-old; no different than 10-year-olds you might find today. She has a terrific imagination, loves to play games, swim, hang out with friends, dance, dream of being a star, and occasionally think about boys. Sally is one of the sweetest, most interesting little characters you'll ever read about in children's literature. The book flows from one of Sally's adventures to another. Once you get into it, you won't want to put it down. Older readers (teenagers and above) might enjoy the advanced humor that younger readers may miss. All in all, a great book, one you can read again and again.

Definitely not just a children's book

Much like Betty Smith's A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Starring Sally J. Friedman contains a portrait of an era. The novel contains more than mere descriptions; I could actually feel what it was like to live in Miami right after World War II. Sally's neighborhood, the school, the beach...all were so perfectly created that I felt that I was there, spending time with Andrea and Shelby along with Sally.
Probably the descriptions in this novel are so apt because this is largely an autobiographical tale. I read that Judy Blume really did spend one school year in Miami with her mother, brother and grandmother, and that many stories contained in Sally J. Friedman really happened to Judy Blume.
The novel realistically addresses true concerns and fears concerning adolescence. While most people no longer worry about one of their neighbors turning out to be Adolph Hitler, children often fear things that they learn from newspapers. Their understanding of current events is often one-sided and uninformed, as they are shielded from all the facts by well-meaning adults. They fill in the gaps with their imaginations. Additionally, kids and adults alike have concerns about fitting in, keeping and making friends, and mortality.
I especially enjoyed Sally's relationship with her mother and father. Her mother is a worrier...to the point that she lets much of the joy in life pass her by. Her father is more free spirited, and tries to explain to Sally why her mother behaves the way that she does. One beautiful scene in the novel occurs when Sally's dad explains that one can worry so much, that they don't enjoy what they have when they have it. Sally struggles to be more like her father, while appreciating the concerns and motivations of her mother.
While this book paints a picture of an era, it contains smart prose and human insight that is timeless. As all good historical fiction does, it teaches us something about the past while involving us in a story that is universal.

A great Judy Blume book.

I used to read many of Judy Blume books as a teenager, but this book together with Blume's "Deenie" have remained dear to me till this day, around 20 years later. I think there is something about this book that is able, so I feel, to address young readers and adults alike. I will not write about the content as so many people have done so before me, just about my thoughts concerning this book.
Sally is looking at the adult world with open curious eyes, not always able to understand grown ups and the grown-up world. The adults in the book, on the other side, are so much better understood by me today, their characters (so well defined) and their efforts to try and raise their children according to the best of their knowledge and what they deem important in life.
This book is dear to me for many reasons. First of all - the characters are so Jewish I immediately feel its close to home. I am talking about the ever worried mother, the constant haunting of the holocaust, the conversations, the Yiddish expressions... and especially my favorite character in the book which is Ma Fanny, the lovely grandmother. I love this book because of the adults efforts to build a sheltered world for the kids who are, as the mother and grandmother say "all my life" and thus sometimes protect them too much from the outside world. Because of the good yet real family relationships ("you are worth a million...more even"...) and the accurate portrayal of the family life. Sally is such a funny lovable character and her inner portrayal is rich and trustworthy.
