The other side of Iran

This is a really enjoyable read and succeeds on a multitude of levels; it is thought provoking, it is touching, it is laugh-out-loud funny, it is entertaining and it is enlightening. It shatters most of our illusions about Iran and its people; it can be dipped into at random revealing fascinating glimpses of Iran's history, politics, architecture and everyday life, yet really delivers when read and savoured as a whole.

The situations that Maslin encounters on his travels range from the seriously life threatening to the totally unexpected, and often the plain bizarre. The sheer hospitality of its people is a real eye opener. Time and again the Iranians go out of their way to help this intrepid traveller, insisting on paying for his meals, for his drinks and for his taxis, and even insisting that he stay at their houses - just because he is a foreigner in their land and therefore their guest. This has the great benefit that we are able to read about the hidden Iran and how life is lived by its ordinary people, and get to understand their hopes and aspirations, and how they see the west.

This is essential reading if you're planning on visiting Iran - Maslin reveals that it has several international standard ski resorts for instance - but it goes way beyond the tourist locations in the guide books, yet doesn't pull any punches about the Iranian government: Maslin has subsequently been banned from re-entering the Islamic Republic! It should also be mandatory reading if you're a member of a government considering invading Iran.

Very Good Travel Memoir

I thoroughly enjoyed this travel diary about a young Brit who takes an extended tour of Iran on less than $500. He does this mostly because of the incredible generosity of the Iranian people, who never hesitate to offer a meal or a bed to the author, simply because he's a foreigner. As an American constantly inundated with anti-Iranian rhetoric from the media, I found Maslin's experience refreshing and candid. I was lucky enough to get to know a few Iranians in college and always found them to be kind and generous, and this book only reinforces that view.

As I read this memoir I found myself laughing out loud and sharing many funny moments with my wife. Read the book and you'll discover these unexpected details of Iranian life: the popularity of Chris de Burgh and "German rock gods" Modern Talking; the effectiveness of the pick-up line "You are beautiful"; "super film" DVDs; the constant greeting of "Can I help you"?; whisky by the can; super-clean subways; friendly taxi drivers; ice cream-jello deserts; the abundance of old Range Rovers and new Hillman Hunters on the roads. The list goes on.

I also found it interesting that many young Iranians despise their government but love their country. A majority of the country's population is made up of young people, and Maslin effectively shows how these young Iranians accept certain Western values while rejecting others, all of which shows a country that is changing.

Some reviewers here have complained that Maslin's periodic discussions of politics and history don't belong, but I disagree. It's impossible to separate the image of Iran from its role in modern history, and Maslin weaves these brief passages about C.I.A. involvement and the 1979 revolution into places where they seem fitting. For the most part they are accurate and in line with what is commonly held to be true among experts on Iran. My only complaint is Maslin's description of the 1979 attack on the U.S. Embassy in Tehran as a student-led, spontaneous event. In fact, the attack was a carefully orchestrated activity by the Ayatollah that went a long way in damaging Iran's reputation around the world. However, to say this book is anti-American because it points out a few ugly truths about American involvement in Iran is silly and just plain ignorant.

Read this book and you'll learn to appreciate your own culture while seeing what a country like Iran has to offer.

So close to being great!

Admittedly I read books on Iran just because, so the title didn't draw me. Which is good, because who ever thought it up didn't read the book in detail. The author tells a delightful story of his trip through Iran with a sense of humor the British excell at. And Iran is a fascinating place, especially if all you know of it is from the mass media. That said, I'd have liked more insight into the people and places he visited in this ancient, and complex society.

Not A Big Fan Of Plays But Enjoyed End Days

What we have here is, I believe, a pretty typical dysfunctional American family, father, mother, daughter, taken to the extreme.

Arthur Stein was a manager at an office in the World Trade Center when the September 11 attacks occurred. Arthur was not at work that day, obviously, but all 65 of the people who worked under him were killed. The story takes place about a year later and Arthur has almost completely shut himself off from the world: rarely leaving the house, not dressing or showering or even eating regularly anymore. His life and his family are slowly leaving him behind.

Sylvia Stein was affected by the tragedy in a much different way. She believes that the end times are near and has turned to God in order to save herself and her family. But during the previous year her religion has begun to edge past fanaticism into something more like cultism. She is now hearing the voice of Jesus, not just in her heart or in her head, but actually out loud, and Jesus has some rather funny conversations with her. Sylvia grows more and more frantic when she believes that Jesus has revealed to her what day the Rapture will occur.

Rachel Stein actually seems to be the most normal member of the family; normal for a teenager that is. That's right, she's a foul-mouthed, pot-smoking goth-girl who is fairly smart but doesn't apply herself She seems to have ruled her father out as any kind of influence in her life, and she has completely rejected the religion that her mother is trying to force on her. After a friend lends her a book written by Stephen Hawking she begins to hear him just like her mother hears Jesus. Their conversations are downright funny sometimes.

It's a family of three all searching desperately for some kind of sense and meaning in a world that continues to have less of both. Instead of pulling together in the crisis they all try their own thing without paying much attention to the others. Then comes Nelson Steinberg who is new at Rachel's school. Nelson is searching for meaning as well but has no direction. He is simultaneously preparing for his bar mitzvah and attending Christian services with the Stein family, soaking up both doctrines eagerly. Add to this the voice of Jesus and the voice of Stephen Hawking, the ultimate atheist, and you've got quite a dynamic going on.

In the end, it doesn't seem like Deborah Zoe Laufer is really trying to say that any member of this group is right or wrong: Christian, atheist, fanatic, shut-in, rebel, or directionless wanderer. Rather, I think she is speaking about the kind of world we live in today: people searching for something whether they know what it is or not and finding it in different places. I won't reveal how this turns out because I want you to give it a listen for yourself, but it was fascinating to see how these people all interacted with each other.

As with all L A Theatre Works productions, End Days features a brilliant and talented cast. Each performer was entirely convincing in his or her role and played well off one another. The full cast includes:

Geometry is Beautiful, Part 2!

"107 Geometry Problems" picks up where "106 Geometry Problems From the AwesomeMath Summer Program" left off (which I have also reviewed). There was so much material, they had to split it into two parts!

The book covers topics such as homothety, spiral similarity, and inversion. Like "106 Geometry Problems," fundamental concepts are explained with well-chosen and illuminating examples, many of which are taken from actual competitions. The many nicely-drawn diagrams (some with color) of the text make the concepts easy to visualize and ably convey the elegance of the material. As indicated, the text also includes 107 additional geometry problems, with complete solutions, that students can practice solving.

107% for 107 Geometry Problems

107 Geometry Problems is a continuation of 106 Geometry Problems by the same authors, so it contains more challenging problems and introduces the reader to more advaned propositions in Euclidean geometry. That said, both books are stand-alones, so you won't feel like walking into the middle of a lecture if you just read this book (as I did). The book starts with about 50 pages of theory that can be said to include everything one needs to know the tackle the hardest problems. Some non-trivial statements include proofs and example problems. But the meat of the book are the Problems, separated into two categories of difficulty. All problems contain solutions - many times several solutions - that contain just enough detail and all include a diagram, so you can read the book even for example on public transport.

107 Geometry Problems is a masterpiece of a work. I have solved many geometry problems in high school and after and seen even more, but the ones included in this book have easily made it to my list of the most beautiful and elegant problems I have encountered. From speaking with the authors I was informed that when preparing this book, they used only a very small fraction (maybe 5%) of problems they found, and I think anyone who has read the book will not doubt that.

As you can see, I am very enthusiastic about this book, but frankly, it is hard not to be. I have not finished all the problems, but so far, I haven't spotted a single mistake. The same goes for grammar - even though English is not the first language of any of the authors, the book reads as if written by a native speaker. In fact, the foreign nationality of the authors is an advantage, as they show us how geometry is done in Czech Republic, Romania and other Eastern European countries - where goemetry is focused on much more than in the US. All in all, I would like to thank the authors for brining us this incredible book.

Don't Let the Projects Put You Off

Other reviewers have mentioned that the aesthetics of the projects in Pin Loom Weaving have a down-home, country handmade look. Some people love this look; others find it off-putting. If you are one for whom the projects are not your cup of tea, this book can still be very useful to you. If you own a Weave-It, Zoom Loom, or any other brand of vintage or modern pin loom, Pin Loom Weaving has all the information you need to create lovely finished projects. Even if you don't own one of these looms, Pin Loom Weaving has templates for you to make your own. I appreciated the fact that the book gave lots of room to finishing techniques and the different ways to join squares. The only quibble I have with Pin Loom Weaving is that it deals ONLY with patterned pin looms, and leaves out evenly-spaced pin looms (such as those that are continuously woven on the diagonal and potholder looms). However, the finishing and joining techniques in Pin Loom Weaving can be easily adapted for any type of small pin loom. I recently used the book as a reference when joining woven squares that I made on a 7 inch square diagonal weave loom. It's a handy book with lots of information; enough to get you started on making projects that suit you and your own aesthetic.

Not what I was hoping for

Like the author, who is a specialist in tiny hand looms like the iconic Weave-It and the new Zoom Loom, I love the simplicity and speed with which you can turn out woven fabric modules on these portable weaving tools. So I looked forward to a book that would explore the possibilities of combining the finished squares into creative, beautiful and modern items. This, unfortunately, is not that book. It begins very well, with detailed instructions for making pin looms in different dimensions, and with clearly-illustrated directions for warping and weaving. The chapter on various ways to connect the woven modules (which the author insists on calling "weavies," a term I find unbearably cutesy) is really excellent -- better than anything I've seen on the subject. My major disappointment was with the 40 projects (I didn't count but that's what the cover says) that comprise the bulk of the book. To my eye, they have a 1950's bazaar-table aesthetic, ranging from the obvious (sew four squares together for a dishcloth) to out-and-out kitsch. Pastel baby blankies and baby-name banners abound. Some scrappy-looking bags. Many stuffed toys including a family of "Amish" dolls and a barnyard of ducks, pigs, cows, cats and dogs. "Home dec" and gift items of the sort that often end up in yard sales. (Maybe I am a design snob, but really, a woven and stuffed cactus plant?) There is one concept, however, with great potential: using woven squares to design larger pieces in the manner of Amish quilts. I wish she had developed this idea further, with more interesting colors than the ever-present pastels. And I'd still love to see a pin loom weaving book with a 21st Century feeling.

Good reference book

I am happy I bought the book even though the projects in the book are not my style. I knew this before I bought the book after getting a look online. My style is Craft as Art not the craftsy down home ducks and chickens.

I didn't purchase the book as a how to for craftsy items. I purchased the book for the possibilities that these looms offer and there are lots of possibilities shown in this book. It's okay that I don't like the given project blanket. The book tells me how to make it and I can substitute my own yarn. Or I can use the pattern as a template and go my own way.

The author gives clear warping instructions and I want to warp my little loom right now. I'm enthusiastic after looking at the book and know that I can refer back to it for instructions on how I can put my squares together to make the project that I want. Now I have the information in one place rather than in bunches of little brochures and leaflets that I've collected over the years.

Best interfaith reading to date

The best interfaith intratextual reading of the Bible and the Qur'an to date. His Liberation Theology approach, combined with his acceptance of Muhammad as a Prophet while retaining his Christian adherence, and his academic training in christian theology and Islamic studies, makes his reading one of the most honest and faithful ever done.
