Awesome But Not For the Faint Of Heart

I made all 4 of the characters in this book. It took me 2 years, working off and on. I LOVE the results. The designer has a unique way of putting the various parts together. They are crocheted on instead of sewn. How she does it is very hard to explain in words, so I would not recommend this pattern for a beginner. She did the best she could in explaining a complicated situation. Experienced crocheters will have difficulty. I had days where I had to set it aside for a day or two and think about it before the light bulb would go off. My advice is "Pay attention to the punctuation marks." It was a difficult project, but oh so worth it when done! I would make them again in a heartbeat!

About the Author
Richard I. Arends is Professor of Educational Leadership and Dean Emeritus at Connecticut State University where he served as Dean of the School of Education and Interim Provost of Academic Affair from 1991-2004.  Before going to Connecticut he was on the faculty and chair of the department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Maryland, College Park. Richard Arends received his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon where he was on the faculty from 1975 to 1983.  A former elementary, middle school, and high school teacher, his special interests are teaching, teacher education, organization development and school improvement. He has worked widely with schools and universities throughout North America, in Jamaica, and in the Pacific Rim, including Australia, Samoa, Palau, and Saipan. 
Professor Arends has authored or contributed to over a dozen books on education including the Second Handbook or Organization Development in Schools, Systems Change Strategies in Education, Exploring Teaching, and Learning to Teach.  The latter is now in its 8th edition and has been translated into several foreign languages.  The recipient of numerous awards, he was selected in 1989 as the outstanding teacher educator in the state of Maryland and in 1990 received the Judith Ruskin Award for outstanding research in education given by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD). From 1995-97 Professor Arends held the William Allen (Boeing) Endowed Chair Boeing in the School of Education at Seattle University.  Currently, he is retired in Portland, Oregon where he pursues favorite projects and continues to write.

Very detailed - wish I had had this when I first started!

I read this book as part of a class I took. I've been teaching about 10 years. This would have been great to have when I first started.

It is extremely detailed about different methods for classroom instruction. It has research basis for the method, history, walkthroughs of the method, examples, etc.

I can't lie, it is a little on the dry side, but it is a textbook, after all. If you had it around, it would be a good resource, and you could skip some of the dry parts.

Also, as of this past summer, Amazon was buying this book back for a very good price, which takes some of the sting away from the high cost!

Required text for class

This was a required text for class. It is one of my more favorites as far as a textbook goes. It has a nice flow and is organized well. It is not a book that I will purposely keep in my library. I will try to sell it at the end of the semester but if it doesn't sell, I will not be too upset.

About the Author

Fadhel M. Ghannouchi is professor and AITF/CRC Chair in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary, Canada, and Director of the Intelligent RF Radio Laboratory. He has held numerous invited positions at several academic and research institutions in Europe, North America and Japan. He has provided consulting services to a number of microwave and wireless communications companies. His research interests are in the areas of microwave instrumentation and measurements, nonlinear modeling of microwave devices and communications systems, design of power and spectrum efficient microwave amplification systems and design of intelligent RF transceivers and software-defined radio systems for wireless and satellite communications. His research activities have led to over 500 publications and 14 US patents (6 pending) and two books. He is Fellow of IEEE and he has been a distinguished microwave lecturer of IEEE MTT-S since 2009.

Mohammad S. Hashmi received MS degree from Darmstadt University of Technology, Germany and PhD degree from Cardiff University, UK. He is now an adjunct researcher at the iRadio Lab, University of Calgary, Canada and Assistant Professor at IIIT Delhi, India. He was previously associated with Philips Semiconductors and Thales Electronics in Germany during which time he was involved in the field of RF circuits and systems. His current research interests are related to nonlinear microwave instrumentation, microwave device characterization, and linearization of power amplifiers for mobile and satellite applications. He was the recipient of 2008 Automatic Radio Frequency Techniques Group (ARFTG) Microwave Measurement Fellowship, and 3rd place winner in the novel and creative instrument design competition organized by IEEE MTT-11 for the year 2008. His research has led to over 40 publications and 3 US patents (pending).

Somi Ekhasomhi lives in Lagos, and has been devouring books for as long as she can remember. In 2012, she started publishing the story that became Always Yours, as a blog serial at lagosromanceseries.com. It was later published as a novel. Her other books include Hidden Currents, the standalone sequel to Always Yours, as well as a short story, Jungle Justice.When she's not writing, she pretends to be an Architect at a Lagos firm. Outstanding Short Story

This is a superbly written short story about a teenage girl in Lagos who witnesses a "necklacing." The descriptions are deceptively simple, but give the reader a clear picture of who the character is and what her life is like. The incident is also well described including the way mob violence can quickly break out. While so many writers waste so many words to say nothing, the author here offers one liners that tell us everything.

There is some use of local pigeon English in the dialogue. The author offers unobtrusive footnotes, but I think most readers will be able to figure them out without looking at the notes. Also in there's a short afterward where the author explains the practice of necklacing.

Readers are not often invited to share the point of view of characters like Oshoke, poor, uneducated, and unattractive. I am grateful to Somi Ekhasomhi for introducing her to me.

While the story is rich in detail about a specific place and people, there is much that is universal -- the way a person like Oshoke is likely to be ignored and discounted, the way all of us are tested when confronted with evil -- Should we act? How can we act?, the way a crowd can suddenly turn. The truth is this kind of "jungle justice" not only occurs in the slums of Lagos, but in one form or another in many places, and all of us are likely at some point in our lives to be in a position where we can and should speak out.

Note: I bought the story when it was entitled: Necklacing. It has since been changed to Jungle Justice. I dislike the new title. Americans have many misconceptions about Africa as it is. This does not take place in a jungle (except in a metaphorical sense: law of the jungle, etc.) There's something a bit sensationalistic about the current title.

My heart breaks

From the first sentence to the last word, I felt like I was there in Lagos. I think that is a quality of a gifted writer like Somi. The ability to transport the reader to another world, even for a little while, is the reason we read. I felt the anguish the main character felt as she watches helplessly, the horrible events taking place a few feet away. This is one of those books you will not be able to put down. My only complaint is that the book eventually ends, and I wanted to keep going. I want to keep traveling with the girl in the story. I want to see where her life takes her. I already know she is a courageous person. I have this feeling she is destined for greatness. The book left me thinking and caring about her even though she is just a character in a story. This ability to make the reader care about the book's characters is the sign of a great writer. I hope the author will somehow find more time to devote to writing so we can all have more of her books to read.

Third world justice

This is a powerful story. The law and justice in third world countries begs to meet the American South pre-civil rights days. People are accused and if the crowd wants in on the horror the accused receives justice even if innocent. Nobody cares and respect for human dignity is beside the point. It disturbs me when Americans want instant justice because the media reports the accused was picked up by the police. Due process of law as spelled out in our constitution has always been the law of the land. But just not in certain parts of the land and not always in Lagos, where the story is to have taken place. I hope it jolts the reader out of complacency as it did me.
