ONE OF THE “FOUNDATIONAL” TEXTS OF PHENOMENOLOGY

Edmund Gustav Albrecht Husserl (1859-1938) was a German philosopher who established the school of phenomenology. He was born into a Jewish family (which later caused him to lose his academic position when the Nazis came to power in 1933), but was baptized as a Lutheran in 1886. He wrote many books, such as On the Phenomenology of the Consciousness of Internal Time, The Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology, Cartesian Meditations, etc.

This book was first published in 1931. Husserl wrote in his Preface to the English Edition, “the work here presented seeks to found a new science … covering a new field of experience, exclusively its own, that of ‘Transcendental Subjectivity.’ … [this] does not signify the outcome of any speculative synthesis, but with its transcendental experiences, capacities, doings, is an absolutely independent realm of direct experience although for reasons of an essential kind is has so far remained inaccessible. Transcendental experience in its theoretical and, at first, descriptive bearing, becomes available only through a radical alteration of that same dispensation under which an experience of the natural world runs its course, a readjustment of viewpoint which, as the methods of approach to the sphere of transcendental phenomenology, is called ‘phenomenological reduction.’ … In this book… we treat of an a priori science… which appropriates, through as pure subjectivity only, the empirical field of fact of transcendental subjectivity with its factual… experiences… and sets out as its a priori the indissoluble essential structures of transcendental subjectivity.” (Pg. 5-6)

He explains, “The philosophical [suspension of judgment], which we propose to adopt, should consist… in this, that in respect of the theoretical content of all previous philosophy, we shall abstain from passing any judgment at all, and that our whole discussion shall respect the limits imposed by this abstention.” (Ch. 2, pg. 72-73) He continues, “we start out from that which antedates all standpoints: from the totality of the intuitively self-given which is prior to any theorizing reflexion, from all that one CAN immediately see and lay hold of, provided one does not allow oneself to be blinded by prejudice, and so led to ignore whole classes of genuine data.” (Ch. 2, pg. 78)

He presents “The Principle of All Principles”: “that very primordial dator Intuition is a source of authority… whatever presents itself in ‘intuition’ in primordial form (as it were in its bodily reality), is simply to be accepted as it gives itself out to be, though only within the limits in which it presents itself… the theory itself would not derive its truth except from primordial data. Every statement which does nothing more than give expression to such data … is thus really… an absolute beginning…” (Ch. 2, pg. 83-84) He suggests, “The right attitude to take in the pre-philosophical … sphere of inquiry… is in full consciousness to discard all skepticism together with all ‘natural philosophy’ and ‘theory of knowledge,’ and find the data of knowledge there where they actually face you, whatever difficulties epistemological reflexion may subsequently raise concerning the possibility of such data being there.” (Ch. 2, pg. 86)

He observes, “I am present to myself continually as someone who perceives, represents, thinks, feels, desires, and so forth… I find myself related in present experience to the fact-world which is constantly about me. But … not every cogiton in which I live has for its cogitatum things, men, objects or contents of one kind or another. Perhaps I am busied with pure numbers and the laws they symbolize… while I am thus occupied some numbers or constructions of a numerical kind will be at the focus of vision… The arithmetical world is there for me only when and so long as I occupy the arithmetical standpoint. But the NATURAL world… is constantly there for me, so long as I live naturally and look in its direction. I am then at the ‘natural standpoint’… The natural world still remains ‘present’ … and in this respect undisturbed by the adoption of new standpoints… the natural world remains unconsidered; it is now the background for my consciousness as act, but it is not the encircling sphere within which an arithmetical world finds its true and proper place. The two worlds are present together but disconnected, apart, that is, from their relation to the Ego, in virtue of which I can freely direct my glance or my acts to the one or the other.” (Ch. 3, pg. 94)

He states, “The ‘true Being’ would therefore be … something that is defined otherwise than as that which is given in perception as corporeal reality, which is given exclusively through its sensory determinations… The thing as strictly experienced gives the mere ‘this,’ an empty X which becomes the bearer of mathematical determinations, and of the corresponding mathematical formulae and exists not in perpetual space, but in an ‘objective space,’ of which the former is the mere ‘symbol,’ a Euclidian manifold of three dimensions that can be only symbolically represented.” (Ch. 4, pg. 116) Later, he adds, “the Being of consciousness… though it would indeed be inevitably modified by a nullifying of the thing-world, would not be affected thereby in its own proper existence… Thus no real thing, none that consciously presents and manifests itself through appearances, is necessary for the Being of consciousness… Immanent Being is therefore without doubt absolute in this sense… On the other hand, the world of the transcendent ‘res’ is related unreservedly to consciousness, not indeed to logical conceptions, but to what is actual.” (Ch. 5, pg. 137)

He outlines, “Thus, instead of living naively in experience… we perform the ‘phenomenological reduction.’ In other words: instead of naively carrying out the acts proper to the nature-constituting consciousness with transcendent theses and allowing ourselves to be led by motives that operate therein… we set all these theses ‘out of action,’ we take no part in them; we direct the glance of apprehension and theoretical inquiry to pure consciousness in its own absolute Being. It is this which remains over as the ‘phenomenological residuum’ we were in quest of… We have literally lost nothing, but have won the whole Absolute Being , which, properly understood, conceals in itself all transcendences, ‘constituting’ them within itself.” (Ch. 5, pg. 140)

Near the end of the book, he summarizes, “we apprehend the regional ‘Idea’ of the Thing in general as that of the self-same something which maintains itself in and through the properly jointed determinate infinities of each regional channel, and proclaims itself in the definitely articulated infinite series of noemata that belong to them… The Thing in its ideal essence presents itself… in the necessary ‘form’ of Time. Intuitive ‘ideation’ … teaches us to know the Thing as necessarily enduring, as in principle endlessly extensible in respect of its duration. We grasp in ‘pure intuition’ …the ‘Idea’ of temporality and of all the essential phases included in it. The Thing… is further… capable in respect of its spatial relations of infinitely various changes of shape, and…position… We grasp the ‘Idea’ of space and the Ideas which it includes. Finally, the Thing is … substantial unity, and as such the unity of causal connections… ALL components of the Thing-Idea are themselves Ideas, each implying the ‘and so forth’ of ‘endless’ possibilities.” (Ch. 13, pg. 382-383)

Single parent Therese Wolley works hard to support her two daughters financially and emotionally. Older daughter Matlida sometimes suffers from nightmares, and young Franny intereprets her world from autistic perspective, eneveloping herself in letters But an item in the newspaper and an obligation to fulfill a promise abruptly alters the family dynamics. Therese packs the girls in her car and drives to her friend Leah's home, which Franny thinks "smells like art." The next day, Leah takes Franny on an outing, and Franny returns to discover her world is totally unbalanced. Therese and Matilda are gone, although her sister leaves behind a journal and a promise to return for her. Franny doesn't understand her abandonment, but in many ways, she copes with the changes in her life in healthier ways than her sibling, her mother and guardian. Leah buries her demons until Franny innocently uncovers them while asking about pieces of artwork she finds under a mattress. Meanwhile, Matilda and her mother by allying herself with a neighborhood bad boy, skipping school, sneaking out of the house and drinking. Therese stubbornly refuses to supply satisfactory answers to Matilda's questions, and she spends more time away from home as she worries that the past will come back to haunt her and her daughter. Although it does not have the strongest plot or ending. Ossowski's narrative is more about the characters and their individual journey's: The author artfully portrays each in meticulous detail and employs superlative imgaery to paint every thought and action.

It left me wishing for better.

This had a very interesting premise: a mother leaves her 9 year-old daughter with an old friend and establishes a new home in another city with the twelve year-old sister. The question of why she would do such an awful thing to her children without a word of explanation is not explained until the very end. The younger girl, Frannie, also seems to be autistic, although that is neither explicitly stated nor explored by any of the adults involved in her life. There is some kind of mysterious connection between the two women who are worlds apart in education and temperament. The nature of the women's connection is also a question mark until the extremely contrived and ridiculous "big incident" ending. There's also the matter of "sparking" by the mom which seems to be a mystic ability to read people. I don't understand why the author had to throw that in. The males were generally poorly developed caricatures with few redeeming qualities. There was a really interesting book in there somewhere, but the plodding narrative development and dramatic conclusion were manipulative.

Poignantly insightful voice 'from the spectrum'

I read Left in one sitting, not primarily because the plot is gripping although it is, but because I couldn't get enough of coming to know the characters especially Franny. Ossowski has portrayed in Franny experiencing life as a child with mild autism and massive anxiety and sensory overload, who lives in a particularly confusing, unpredictable and often cruel world. She has done this in a poetic and non-clinical way, seamlessly integrated into this moving story of love and pain, selfishness and selflessness, nature and nurture. While this novel is not about autism, the unique perspectives of each of the narrator's voices include Franny's. As a Psychologist who works with children with autism and anxiety, I feel fiction and film rarely get it quite right, but Ossowski has really nailed it; the continual struggle to make sense of others' actions, both the struggle we all share and the extra struggle that comes with the spectrum, the sensation of impending anxiety, of being about to be overcome by anxiety and overload, the extra finely tuned perceptions within the quest for context, and the immense relief and joy in situations that are free of anxiety and struggle, that make sense, and that are also filled with emotional connection, with love, such as Franny's precious hours in the quiet pool with her beloved Leah watching her, smiling down at her and waving.

Beautiful writing, fascinating characters in a story of love and forgiveness

Can love and forgiveness be strong enough to overcome the harm caused by fear, misunderstanding, and abandonment? That's a central question in this wonderful first novel by Tamar Ossowski.

It tells the stories of a mother and two daughters: twelve-year-old Matilda; her sister, nine-year-old Franny, who has autism; and single mother Therese, who suddenly abandons Franny and runs off with Matilda to a new town to start life over. Ossowski tells the story in the alternating voices of the two sisters, interspersed with Therese's story told in third person and largely flashback, examining what led up to her desperate act and why she did it.

Ossowski has made her characters distinctly different, with compelling voices, and her writing is at its most powerful and beautiful when she's speaking in the voices of the two girls. Matilda, the older sister, is intelligent perhaps beyond her years and rebellious with good reason; Therese has spirited her away to a strange place with no explanation, leaving her beloved sister behind with Therese's best friend for no reason that Matilda can fathom. Her anger and resentment fester and come close to hatred toward her mother. When Matilda develops a crush on her new friend's older brother and Therese warns her to keep away from him, it only drives Matilda closer to him. Throughout the novel she never forgets the promise she left behind for Franny: that she will come back for her and bring her home.

Therese is the most difficult and puzzling character initially. She's self-centered, arrogant, and supremely confident that her instincts are always correct; she doesn't often stop to think about consequences. Early in her life she discovered her ability to "spark" people and things--to see that they have secrets, to know when they will be important in her life. But her ability suddenly fails her when she meets Tim, a grocery clerk, to whom she nevertheless feels a strange attraction. She becomes more intrigued when she learns that he lives with his mother inside a small red house and when he refuses to take her inside or introduce her to his mother. She becomes convinced that the red house--and Tim and his mother--are part of her destiny. Because she believes so completely in her instincts, and because her "biggest weakness was an insatiable need to uncover secrets," she begins to scheme and manipulate to make her way inside the house and into their lives.

Franny is Ossowski's most fascinating and sympathetic creation. Her voice is a revelation as to how much really goes on inside the minds of children with autism. FINALLY! A translation of The Inferno that I not only understand, but REALLY like. It's evident that one of Salvidio's goals was to make Dante's classic work accessible to today's reader. I would also add that the way he did the footnotes is really helpful -- further eveidence that he has a genuine interest in the reader's enjoyment of something he feels passionate about. I plan on reading Salvidio's other translations as well. I'm happy to say that the "classics" are no longer foreign to me, thanks to Frank Salvidio.

A brilliant translation plus copious notes and knowledgeable, illuminating insights by Mr. Salvidio make the complex "Inferno" so much more understandable and easier to appreciate. Employing an easy to read parlance replete with witty annotations and insight into the medieval and modern Italian man, Mr. Salvidio proffers an entertaining yet erudite rendition of this classic. Moreover, it is direct and clear.

I do regret not having this fresh voice when Dante was required reading for it flows flawlessly. This translation should be any Classics professor's first choice for his students.

About the Author
Kathleen M. Haywood, PhD, is a professor and associate dean for graduate education at the University of Missouri at St. Louis, where she researches life span motor development and teaches courses in motor behavior and development, sport psychology, and biomechanics. She earned her PhD in motor behavior from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1976.

Haywood is a fellow of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education and the Research Consortium of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD). She is also a recipient of AAHPERD's Mabel Lee Award. In addition, Haywood has served as president of the North American Society for Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity and as chairperson of the Motor Development Academy of AAHPERD.

Haywood is also the coauthor of the first and second editions of Archery: Steps to Success and Teaching Archery: Steps to Success, published by Human Kinetics. She resides in Saint Charles, Missouri, and in her free time enjoys fitness training, tennis, and dog training.

Nancy Getchell, PhD, is an associate professor at the University of Delaware in Newark. She has taught courses in motor development, motor control and learning, research methods, and women in sport. For nearly 20 years, Getchell has focused her research on motor development.

Getchell currently serves as section editor for the Growth and Motor Development Section of Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport. She is a member of the North American Society for Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity, the International Society of Motor Control, and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). Getchell has also served as the chairperson of the AAHPERD Motor Development and Learning Academy.

In 2001, Getchell was the recipient of the Lolas E. Halverson Young Investigators Award in motor development. She earned a PhD in kinesiology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1996.

Getchell resides in Wilmington, Delaware, where she enjoys hiking, playing soccer, and bicycling.

An excellent overview of theory and application

There is a clarity to the way the author presents the material in this book which I found refreshing and helpful. I have a Master's Degree in Physical Therapy and managed, through this book, to finally get a handle on some of the theoretical material that blew past me during the mania of graduate school. The author is especially good in discussing the Ecological vs. the Maturational models of motor development and motor learning. If you are in pediatrics in any way, I highly recommend this book to you. It offers a very clear "helicopter view" of some very controversial and complicated material without over-simplifying things.

This book is easy to understand as I have read other motor learning books and they were not a fun read so I did not get much out of the book. Also with this book it has a webiste to log into so you can make sure you understand the concepts.

This is definitely not an in-depth explanation of Hadoop, but would be good for a beginner trying to understand the concepts of how Hadoop can be used for big data. It's definitely a different approach from the standard database format.

Well written, 30,000 foot view of Hadoop, but not for the experienced sysadmin.

Got the kindle edition for free. I certainly can't complain about the price ☺

It's not bad for what it is - a high-level overview of Hadoop. If you're management in a company thinking about Hadoop, this might be a useful read. But it is now somewhat dated, since Hadoop 2.x and YARN have become the de-facto "standard" for about a year now and that architecture is significantly different from before.

If you're an experienced Hadoop admin, this is probably not worth your time.

I'm a co-contributor to this conference proceedings book, so I will limit my comments to the other seconds of the book. This is a uniquely relevant book on a topic that continually undergoes debate and redefinition. Within these pages you'll find some of the most insightful perspectives on how businesses can design the means to create value. Each section contains an opinion and direction on how to use Business Architecture to its advance. What is different about this book than others is that it set about documenting the convergence of opinions that is being established.

Business Architecture as a sub-discipline of enterprise architecture has been around for decades, but the usage of these powerful methods and frameworks to drive business design and strategic execution is a more recent development. I congratulate the publisher for building a collection of methodology articles and real business case studies that highlight the potential of this modern practice.

As a co-contributor to this book I highly recommend to use this book as a reference for upcoming challenges an enterprise will need to tackle, especially who's organization hasn't yet understood the importance of structural approach to digitization. This book contains chapters for every entry level of understanding. You do not need to be and Architect to understand the value for your business. It also includes a vast set of references that is useful even for and experienced architect. Last but not least, a big thank you for all co-contributors for sharing their thoughts. I got some nice ideas to illustrate my next one-pager for my management team.
