I found this to be quirky, witty and, like many good scifi works, full of stinging satire. The characters are memorable and the plot twists away from a few expected norms. Definitely worth buying.

A thorougly entertaining book in a style that could be described as Douglas Adams meets Kurt Vonnegut

Rarely do I read a novel so unique that it keeps me turning the pages past my designated bed time. Yet, I find myself admitting that this was one of those novels. The author has a very distinct voice and his command of the language is immediately clear. From vivid imagery and illustrative dialog, all the way to a stellar character arc that moves the individuals that populate this novel forward at all times. Dave is the most intriguing of the group, perhaps only because he parallels my own thoughts in many ways: A hard-working everyman with a chance at a longer life who, unlike many, questions the value in it. His trajectory was the most enjoyable for this reason and he made the story all the more real and believable. Also, from shakes, to implants and procedures, the creative means at which the story exhibits the longevity focus was fun to read about. I believe this was because it echoed the myriad items and attempts people in our time take in order to remain youthful at any cost; this made the novel a humorous, yet philosophical metaphor as well. Finally, when I reached the end, I found it to be a perfect catharsis that wrapped the novel up perfectly.

In summary, if anyone else is looking for a unique novel with a very individual voice, you can’t do better than this one. I personally look forward to reading more from this talented author.

Tales of real life soldiers of fortune

"Mercs" is a series of tiny anecdotes (usually anywhere from 3-10 pages) about various mercenaries throughout history, with a special emphasis on the twentieth century, except for the final section, which is a long long piece on mercenaries sent to start a coup in Ghana. Most of the stories range from lame to fascinating, depending on what happens. My favorite anecdotes were the ones about Sir John de Hawkwood, English condotierre in Renaissance Italy. The anecdotes that didn't hold too much of an interest to me are the ones from the mid-20th century, especially the ones in Vietnam (they just kinda blend together to me). I also thought it might have been a bit better if they included a bit more of the post-Cold War mercenaries. But all in all I would say it's a decent book.

A good overview of historical professional soldiering

There are many causes worth fighting for, but some just go without mention thanks to lack of media coverage (Biafra comes to mind). Some mercenaries do not fit the Hollywood mold of a ruthless, senseless warmonger with a thirst for blood and the next big paycheck. Some mercs are angels of mercy, sacrificing themselves for those whom it may not be "politically suitable" for other large nations (read: USA) to aid.
"Mercs" covers some of these individuals with interesting non-fiction short stories. Of particular interest to this reader were the accounts of Count Carl Gustav von Rosen, who led five modified light aircraft armed with small rocket pods on morning raids against the Nigerian Air Force (mostly MiGs), and the stories concerning the history of the French Foreign Legion.

Mercs-- A cut above the rest

This is a highly interesting collection of stories. It covers the history of merenaries from the Greeks in Persia to the modern day drug wars. This book has a definite intellectual edge to it, as the writers clearly have a decent education. If you are used to reading military stories written by veterans with little or no education (not to say the stories are not interesting) this is a refreshing, clearly written book. I enjoyed it thouroughly, and learned many things that I found both surprising and entertaining.

Books on Dufy are expensive and sometimes hard to find. This older edition is a great introduction. The text is very good, informative and makes the man come to life. The illustrations, while small, are top notch. Most older Skira editions contain the "tipped in" (glued in) illustrations, all in color. These were printed on fine, hard paper (the text is on much softer stock) and, thus, retain great brightness and impact. Growing up with these Skira (and Taschen) books I find that they hold up very well as art books. There is an old time grace to them.

This book has a lot of useful information in it but it's very poorly written. I suggest proof reading and editing. Maybe a second edition would help clarify everything. First few chapters are based on opinion and have very little to back up biased statements. If you can get past the awful grammar and over use of commas you will find that the rest of the book is information that can be found in Dan Millman's beautifully written "The Life You Were Born to Live." "I Am Love" takes the life purpose system and waters it down. It's over simplified and vague.

I've always loved Doherty's books. And this book, Atlantis - Bermuda Triangle - has a great storyline.

Here's the problem - it is unbelievable how many spelling errors there are in the Kindle version of this novel. I'm not exaggerating when I say that you can hardly get through 3 pages on-screen without finding one. Now, I'm no professional proofreader (maybe I should be), but that many errors is inexcusable. It completely disrupts the flow of the book, your brain having to decipher what in the world you just read.

And twice, believe it or not, the book had the wrong character talking! In a conversation between Dane and Sin Fen, all of a sudden Ariana was speaking, even though she wasn't in the "scene." Then it reverted back to Sin Fen. The second had a recently-dead captain speaking (about himself, I might add), then reverted back to the one that the reader KNEW to be alive and in the current conversation. I mean, c'mon, proofreaders...seriously?

I'd recommend this book to Doherty fans, but be prepared to jump through some mental hoops as you navigate the ungodly amount of errors.

CIA agent Foreman meets with former Green Beret Eric Dane and apparent agent Sin Fen to discuss the Shadows. No one knows much about these invaders that try to enter the earth's surface through scattered gates such as those found in the Bermuda Triangle, Cambodia's Angkor, and Japan's Devil Sea. However, Forman worries that the enemy now possesses nuclear missile capability as the USS Wyoming vanished in the Bermuda Triangle gate.

The Shadows send nuclear missiles that strike the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where two tectonic plates lie. Apparently, the Shadows plan to cause pandemic destruction to a degree that the planet has not felt since the collapse of Atlantis in 10,000 BC. Dane and Fen must find the long lost "shield" that will protect the planet if humanity is to survive an enemy that wants to end mankind's reign.

ATLANTIS: BERMUDA TRIANGLE is an exciting military science fiction work that will please fans of non-stop action thrillers. Though Greg Donegan adds a little bit of this mythology and that myth into his mix, the tale remains entertainingly fun as long as the reader allows his or her credibility to be parked on the sidelines. Action, action, and more action is the theme of this plot as Dane and his forces try to stop an enemy whose long term strategic vision (thousands of years) is the mass destruction of Homo sapiens.
