About the Author
Dr. Steve Warner is a mathematician and test prep expert who has been tutoring students in mathematics for standardized tests since 1999. My daughter raised her SAT score in Math considerably (about 80 points) after going through this book. She thought it was very helpful. Her problem was that since she had taken Algebra in 8th grade and Geometry in 9th, she had forgotten some basic things that the SAT tests in Math. It also helped her in some advanced areas. My wife helped her a bit (she's an economist w/ big math skills) and she also liked the book.

I got these for my 17yo son and with the help of his books and Dr. Steve, he want from 550 to 720. College is expensive, not getting into the right one even more so...these books are worth every penny.

At the end of the day you get out of it what you put in so that is an important component but these books provide your kid with foundational expertise, structured thought and practice that is invaluable.

As a student facing the SATs, I found this very informative. I like how Dr. Warner, discusses methods to use that can be applied to all problems which opens the opportunity open for scoring higher. I really enjoy the multiple ways he solves problems, which reinforces the idea of how much of a variety there is to solve a math problem. I highly recommend his books for math SAT prep!

A pre-Read Thought

Many of the hundreds of reviews I've read on this book point out the flaws of the movie or express something of disappointment. The films themselves were force to squish a lot of plot-themes into a relatively short time allocation. All of the charaters have rich backgrounds, and for Lucas to pick and choose what highlights from those backgrounds he was to show in the movie was, in my opinion, a wise selection, if only for the sake of continuity and fluidity. It is not difficult to understand why Anakin was introduced so far into the movie- the story is not about him, at least not him alone. The ultimate theme is the struggle between good and evil, the balance between the light and the dark, heaven and hell- the abstract reality of the uniting of opposites- and the intimate relationship this has with the lives of the characters and the society in which their lives take place. I agree with many who say that the Star Wars saga is the myth of the technological age. I look forward to reading this novel, and the many more I have to look forward to will expand this modern myth to infinite depths. I wonder if Lucas will end up producing a follow-up trilogy to Luke's involvement?

OK....Like the Movie

I was only luke warm on the movie, which may explain why I was only lukewarm on the book. As with most beginning books/movies, the pace is sort of slow and not a lot happens. The most pivotal event in this book was the death of Qui-Gon at the hands of Darth Maul and the council's reluctant acceptance to let Obi-Wan train Anakin as a Jedi. I got the feeling that they only did it because Qui-Gon was killed.

It also provided a good base for the character of Anakin. Something I found really ironic and kind of weird was how Anakin spent the night with a Tusken raider. Ironic because he slaughters the entire camp in the next episode. Jar-Jar was every bit as annoying in the book as in the movie. The other parts were kind of hum-drum.

I did not like the characterization of Obi-Wan in this book. A bit of a snob, isn't he? There were points in the book where he was a little stuck up and other points where was just a plain jerk! Especially towards Anakin. In general the Obi-Wan in these new episodes contrasts greatly from the original Obi-Wan. The original Obi-Wan is a lot nicer, and more good natured.

Also, Lucas and Brooks sort of contrasted their original first episode (now episode IV) with this book by introducing Qui-Gon. In the original episodes, Yoda was officially Obi-Wan's master. Did you notice how similar Anakin was to Qui-Gon? Both Anakin and Obi-Wan felt completely lost after after Qui-Gon's death. And let's face it: Obi-Wan was in no way ready to train Anakin-he was far too young and did not have enough experience. (As usual, Yoda was right...annoying isn't it?) Even though it was destined that Obi-Wan and Anakin be brought together for the sake of a good movie let's face it: Anakin would not have turned to the dark side if Qui-Gon has been his mentor instead of Obi-Wan.

Better than the movie

I'm a huge Star Wars fan and never really had read one of the books that were adapted from the movie until this one. I remember reading the first time I did back when the movie had just came out and I can remember how I spent every second I could reading this book. If you're a star wars fan like me you'll definitely enjoy the book. I love this book as it makes the movie even better as the book goes into more detail of the story line and plot that you just felt like there was something missing there in the movie. The book is very well written by Terry Brooks the detail and the thoughtfulness that was put into this book is just amazing! I love to read this over and over still!

About the Author
Dr Alastair Finlan teaches in the History Department at the American University in Cairo. He has also lectured at the Universities of Keele and Plymouth.

A great place to start

In order to have a good grasp on what's happening in Iraq today, an understanding of the war in 1991 is essential. There's a fair amount of literature on the "first" gulf war, but Finlan's book would be a great place to start if you're not already familiar with the subject.

The Essential Histories series is aimed towards the beginner, with the goal of providing a short and readable account of the main issues surrounding a particular conflict. Finlan's book does a very good job at providing context to the war by covering most of the relevant angles. If the book is to be faulted for anything, it would be that it's heavily skewed towards the military aspect of the war at the expense of the political details. The political background to the war was just as important as the military one and should have been given more attention.

Finlan's treatment of the subject is objective and fair for the most part. While the book is quite short (only 84 pages of text) the purpose of the book is to be introductory, not all inclusive. The only factual innacuracy is that he attributed the 1996 Khobar Towers attack to Saudi dissidents, but it is widely known that Hezbollah, working with Iran, were responsible for the attack.

Anyone desiring a greater understanding of Iraq that doesn't know quite where to start would most likely benefit from this book. For those already familiar with Iraq and its history, this book will not provide anything new.

Very good summary of the 1991 Gulf War

This book will give you a very good overview of the 1991 conflict in about 90 pages. The events leading to the war, the opposing forces and the description of the operations are clearly exposed. The day-by-day color maps showing the ground war and the progression of the coalition forces are particularly excellent. The chapter on casualties is especially interesting concerning the iraqi combat and civilian losses, considering the discrepancies in numbers previously published (from estimates as low as 750 military deaths to the wild and groundless 200'000 total deaths boasted by some media).

Definitive Text for Shaft Alignment Work

Quite simply, this is the definitive text for shaft alignment work. If you do any type of machinery alignment, you need a copy of this book. Just about every situation is covered in this text. The author does seem to have a bias against "laser" alignment devices, but other than this, there is little to fault in this book. Highly recommended.

Outstanding Machinery Alignment Book

There are very few books about machinery alignment. This is the best I have encountered for machinery alignment. The tried and true methods and techniques discussed in this book are what is used in the industry for large rotating equipment.

An added bonus of this book is the detailed history of rotating equipment and related alignment methods.

Rotating equipment engineers should consider having this book in your personal library.
