Island Flame, by Karen Robards

Dear Listener,

It is difficult for an author to choose a favorite from among her own books, especially when she has been lucky enough―as I have―to make a career out of doing what she loves. But some stories are memorable because they mark an important milestone in an author’s life, and for me, perhaps none is more special than Island Flame―my very first book. I was thrilled when it was published, and now, more than thirty years later, I am just as excited to share it again with you.

Island Flame is a classic tale of romance on the high seas, featuring two extraordinary characters: the headstrong Lady Catherine Aldley and the legendary pirate Jonathan Hale. I don’t have to tell you that their tumultuous escapade sizzles with passion (lots of passion!), but what I hope you will take away most from Cathy and Jonathan is that dreams do come true―in love and in life. Mine did, and I hope yours will too.

I look forward to sharing many more adventures together in the future.

Enjoy!

From the Inside Flap
Bestselling, award-winning author Karen Robards brings to life two extraordinary characters--an aristocratic beauty and a notorious pirate--in a love story that sizzles with passionate adventure and unbridled desire. . . .

Lady Catherine Aldley was en route to London when pirates attacked her ship. Just in time, Captain Jonathan Hale rescued her from his own men, sweeping her into his arms, staking his claim on the pampered daughter of England's ambassador to Portugal. All Catherine had were her wits and the will to beat her captor at his own game. His searing kisses kindled unfamiliar passions, but she vowed to make him her prisoner of desire. . . .

He was a legendary pirate, daring, triumphant, free. Jonathan Hale never took captives and always escaped--until he saw the headstrong beauty he couldn't leave behind. She was fire and ice, a lady outraged, a tigress in his arms. Cathy refused to be treated like chattel, yet yielded to his sensual invasion as she conquered his body and soul. She made loving truly dangerous, exposing his deepest fears--and his mutinous heart. . . .

a Real Pirate
By nitpick
Prepare yourself for a true pirate, or do not read this book.(*Rape scenes.)
He is a nasty viscious cutthroat. I waited on the fleeting moments Cathy was able to wring a drop of kindness out of him.

Jon was a neglected child who left home at sixteen to sail. Later, he became a pirate; committing robbery on the high seas! Not a licensed privateer, buccaneer, a sailor w/ a cause, or anything otherwise excused.

Yes, there were the misunderstandings as other reviews noted, but compared to other writers ... the conflicts didn't drag out. The build-ups and anticipation kept it exciting without being frustrating.

I loved it!

Correct me if I'm wrong!!!
By A Customer
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the summaries failed to mention this book is about the rape of a 16 year old girl by a 30+ year old man. Girl is raped by pirate, within a couple of hours girl has sex with pirate, eventually girl falls in love with pirate. If you enjoy reading books along this theme, then Island Flame is for you.

Didn't age well at all
By Anne M. Marble
I used to read lots of these books in the 1980s, when this originally came out. Then again, even way back then, I wished the heroes hadn't been such jealous and arrogant bullies. And I wished the characters had acted with common sense when the Big Misunderstandings popped up.
The hero is a pillaging pirate, and the heroine is an innocent captive -- but of course, she doesn't remain innocent for long. There's forced seduction, rape, jealousy, verbal abuse, physical abuse, fighting, more verbal abuse, more rape, and more fighting. As bad as the rapes were, the verbal abuse scared me more than the rape -- because it was even more prevelant.
Jonathan is more than a decade older than Catherine. But he doesn't act like it. Catherine is also great a foot-stomping. As if the rapes weren't bad enough, the characters act like children.
I'm so glad Karen Robards has gotten better since this book (her first) came out. And I'm glad the publishers have stopped putting out rape fests like this one.
